    Lets discuss backdrops

Assuming your tank is glass, you can always razor blade the paint off. if its thick latex paint, you can sometimes peel it all off in one sheet. If you might use it as a peninsula tank be sure to tape off the trim and sides of the tank before painting. I never bother and just slather that paint...

    Lets discuss backdrops

I've had aquariums 15 years, more than half of my life and every new tank gets a nice thick coat of black paint on the back. Deep blue looks ok if you are dedicated to keeping the back clean but you will never go wrong with black. Paper backers will warp and show salt creep/drips over time and...

A few questions regarding setting up an old tank again

err scratch that, their $1 per gallon sale is now limited to 29g and under. They said bigger tanks are 40% off. I bought another 40b today and it rung up 49.99. which still isnt bad at all. good chance to start with a fresh tank for cheap

A few questions regarding setting up an old tank again

Welcome back! as others have said, before you go spending money on new equipment, it would probably be a smart idea to reseal that tank. or even better- buy a new one. a 33 long is a good size for a frag tank lit by t5 but generally not a very good size for your display reef. odd proportions...

    Large Reef Stocking Without Quarantine

I thought I could get away with setting up a new tank taking calculated risks regarding proper QT. I wasted 9 months worth of progress. I wish I just started with cooked or sterile dry rock and proper quarantine for both coral and fish. I tried cheating the first two tries but it came back to...

Connecting outside line to protein skimmer

Yes, that yellow line is where the pump draws in air. where it connects up top is a muffler of sorts to quiet the air intake. If you do decide to bring in outside air, I would recommend using a much larger tube like flexible 3/8" silicon, vinyl or even pex tubing to minimize restriction. You can...

    Uneven stand top

I put a strip of hard green foam sheet insulation between every tank and stand I have set up for ten years. It evens out any imperfections in the stands surface and never comes close to touching the tanks glass bottom. 100+ gallon tanks wont compress the foam more than 1/16". Edit: also- tanks...

Connecting outside line to protein skimmer

First confirm that you have a high co2 issue by testing a sample, aerate it outside for an hour with an air pump and test again. if the PH jumps up then indoor co2 is your issue. I'm fighting an unbelievably frustrating co2 problem. My skimmer pump is a sicce psk-1000 and pulls a good amount of...

    13hr lighting cycle with 2 a360

I have two over my 90 along with two pairs of T5 bulbs and I REALLY love the setup. The T5 helps even out the shading effect from the two point sources of light and tame down the intense shimmer so the tank looks more natural and less disorienting. An ATI blue and white bulb kick on at 18:00 and...

    Pump or controller recommendation

Bummer reading the reefkeepers arent being produced anymore. I was going to buy one as a cheap temp controller for my qt systems i wish apex made a module for multiple temp probes like the reefkeeper. Otherwise I absolutely love my apex and it is certainly what you need! I upgraded from the jr...

    Help interpenetrating conductivity probe trends

yup, the probe is a month old. I'm already on calibration #4... each time the probe was in tank water 7-10 days before drying and calibrating again. Today is day ten and the salinity continues to trend upwards. I have done ample homework on proper probe calibration, isolating probe and wire from...

    Help interpenetrating conductivity probe trends

I mention that in my first post and illustrate it in the second post. It is in a corner of the fuge furthest away from any other wires/electronics. mcgyvr- Yes I was aware the probe is susceptible to interference from other wires especially ballasts but I never even thought about the stray...

    Help interpenetrating conductivity probe trends

mcgyvr- I always appreciate your short blunt answers! Yes I know I am over complicating things with all the gadgets and over analyzing but I have not taken any actions based on the probe readings nor do I plan on having it control anything aside from an alarm/notification if it gets way out of...

    Help interpenetrating conductivity probe trends

Here ya go! I initially didnt include this graph because while the heater cycles on less frequently when the lights are on, the temp rarely goes above lights off temp. I have the heaters set to kick on at 78.5 and off at 78.8. because the heater is after the temp probe, the tank gets up to 78.9...
