175 or 250 MH??

Anemia

Hey guys (and gals)

I have a 40 gallon breeder (36x18x15) that I have been running since august. I bought the setup with VHO lighting, pending an upgrade to MH once the money came rolling in. All of my corals seem happy under the VHO's (save for a few acros that are healthy looking, but dont show any signs of new growth). I had been wanting a clam for a LONG time. Finally this afternoon, I picked up a nice 2 inch maxima that is absolutely stunning to look at. (the money is obviously in now) and I'm planning on ordering my halide for the tank this weekend. I'm scared about heat issues so I figured I'd go with a 175, but I did some looking around on this forum and a number of threads mentioned that the 250's dont run hardly any hotter, and they're only like 20 bucks more.

Keep in mind the tank is only 15 inches deep here. The bulb will be no more than 8 inches from the water, probably more like 7. I KNOW a 175 will be enough light for what I'm trying to do, but I'm looking for opinions on whether I should get a 250 or not. Could this be detrimental to my tank inhabitants? Should I stick with the original plan to get a 175?

Any advice would be great. If there's no replys that sway me by the time I order the halide, I'm going with a 175 and I won't feel bad about it. Just wondering if I should consider the 250.

Thanks.

250 because you cant have just 1 clam and you are really buying the lighting for you next, (larger) tank :)

I had the same question about a month and a half ago. The 250 is probably only about $25 more. I went with the 250 on my 15 gallon. No turning back. Love it. So does my 2" Max.

went with an icecap 250MH and a 10KK ushio. VERY glad I did. it looks EXCELLENT. my girlfriend fell in love with the tank all over again.
