2.5 gallon nano

Thinking of getting a 2 1/2 gallon tank and putting on a 24 watt pc refugium light, getting two pounds of live sand and two pounds of live rock, and putting on a hob filter (rated for a ten gallon) filled w/ macroalgae and lr rubble. I'd keep a small damsel or clown goby, some invertebrates, some pumping xenia, and whatever other coral frags I find w/ low light requirements that I like.
Does this sound like it could be stable?

You would probably be better off with a 6g JBJ NanoCube.
You can get them for $90 on the internet. I have one and my corals
and inverts are doing just fine. Still a small tank with everything included and concealed. Do a 1g water change everyweek and you should be fine.
Take out the sponge, run carbon and throw a heater in the rear chamber.
Take a look at mine in the "show me your nano" post.

with picos, you should resist the urge of packing them full of stuff you dont need. when it comes to equiptment, the simplest is best. rock and macro (in the filter) will likely just clog up your HOB and collect detritus.

as for fish, i have a 2.5 with no fish, no macro, and just a PH for circulation. its amazing how many creatures appeared from the liverock. i have several types of pods, mysis, and a couple different types of snails. if you stare at it the life just appears out of nowhere.

anyway, these are just my opinions, take from it what you like.

oh, and with an 18w PC light im keeping GSP, zoas, palys, shrooms, candycane, xenia, and finger leather. all are growing and spreading.

I just setup a similar setup in a 2.5g with some sand and live rock. The only technology is 18w coralife mini and I went with a internal Duetto Mini filter (Its basically a micro-jet with a sponge compartment underneath - alot like the Elite mini). The Aqua Clear 20 (mini power filter) seemed to big and interferes with the placement of the lights

So far no need for a heater - tank was 86 after lights were on a few hours, and 79-80 overnight with no lights.

I think having fish may be pushing it, so my plan is a few hermits and decorative shrimp - Maybe some sexy shrimpy as others suggested in a recent thread. A small, hardy fish might work, but frequent water changes would be important.

Kogo - you make me laugh. You are one funny reefer.

Agree with the other (non jbj sponsored) advise. Skip the fish, stocking plans seem ok.

:D

there is alot of good 2.5g build threads on this forum. if you skim through the first few pages of threads youll probably find alot of good ideas, and different ways of doing things.

most will recomend no fish, but some have been succesful with gobies and shrimp. there are some realy cool mantis shrimp 2.5g too.

Kogo - you are not suggesting research are you?

that's what this is for

lostcause - please do not look at this as a flame

personaly, i dont mind repeat threads. different people often chime in, others link previously helpfull threads, and there are often subtle nuances to questions that evolve into new questions and build threads.

it is also a great way for people new to the boards to get a few posts in. by the way .... welcome to reef central lostcause and welcome to the nano forum as well.

im sure carl will post thet welcome fish thingy shortly. (i forget how)

And i really am not flaming you. Your post was neither argumentative or abusive. It wasn't even dumb. Welcome to the board.

I just setup a 2.5 and put it in my desk. I have a 10 gallon filter on it but i put a plexiglass wall in on one side with slits on teh top for an overflow. I have the long part of the filter, that sucks up water on the side of the plexiglass where all the cheato Lr are going and the other part with water flowing out on the other side. i spray painted the backs and bottom and used a bare bottom. Im only putting frags inside so they can grow out and mature before i put them in eitehr my 20 or 12 nano
