2010's official OT URS bowhunting thread

had a 6 come in behind me the other day. never offered a shot until he was out of range. trying again friday and then giving it a rest until gun starts.

Got a decent sized doe this morning. Wasnt with a buck and I have lots of doe tags to fill so I sent a rage through one of her lungs. What a mess, if ya catch my drift...

Nice work! I'm chomping at the bit. Time is so limited for me, I have to pick my spots. Gotta work all weekend. Monday is my next chance. Going ALL DAY and I'll shoot anything! Got 1 doe tag left and my Buck tag for bow still. I don't care if it's a scraggle-buck, he's going down. I've always got my shotgun tag to use. I've got a few small spots that are bow only....I hope......

Just on the tax records looking for spots for next year. I've got almost 500 acres within 1 mile of us at our new house. Trying to track down who owns it. See if they mind one lowly bow only hunter who won't leave a trace......

got someone at work to pick up the 4 hours I was scheduled tomorrow. that treestand is looking mighty comfy. plan on all day. moved it back a couple days ago to my sweet spot on the property. I think the problem with the property is there is no food close. the deer I see tend to be just passing through and not waiting around. I agree with cully that at this point it's brown it's down. hate to hunt that way, but the landowners practice anything but qdm.

Got a nice fat doe tonight. Misjudged the yardage a little and the shot was lower than I would've liked. Still hit the heart and she was down in 30 yards.

Excellent!!! It's killing me that I can't get out. Working all weekend. I'll be out there all day Monday and Thurday night. The orange army approaches. I've seen tons of guys with tree stand and ATV's in the back of their trucks. Good timing! Way to plan ahead!

Ah, the cidiot army approaches. Always scares me to be in the woods with them on opening weekend. Thankfully the hunters on property around the family farms are locals but we all know the respect that some people don't have for property boundaries.

I realize desperation is a stinky cologne, but do any of you guys resort to scents? other than human pee? Estrus? How about any luck grunting or rattling?

I have used estrous and non dominant young buck before. If they are used at the wrong time they can really mess up your hunt. I try to not use them and keep my own scent suppressed as much as I can. Scentlock and scent blocker are my friends.

my brother in law has had some luck with estrous. shot a buck following the trail he dragged the last 2 years in a row. problem is they didn't come in until last light. I like morning hunts myself. easier to track if needed. I called in a six point this year using my bone collector flextone. gave a couple grunts and a growl. he came in looking to fight. problem is he came in fast and nowhere where I had a clear shot.

Yeah seems like scents offer too many opportunities to blow your cover or have deer associate humans with strong scents. No matter how much spray or scent blocker clothing, we still stink I'm sure. Best to just play the wind.

I do plan on rattling an grunting up a bit tonight. I've got really good recon on a pack of does. SO I'm hoping Mr Big might show up tonight. Absolutely killed me to be on call this weekend and not being able to hunt.

Here's a recipe :
Kentucky Style Venison
take your stewing meat and wrap with bacon then run a toothpick through it.
drizzle worchestershire sauce over the meat and bacon
pour your favorite BBQ sauce over the meat and bacon
slice up and apple and a pear and spread over the meat and broil
I usually broil for about 20 min. the pear and apples will melt into the meat/bacon

Enjoy!!!!

Henry, I never made that recipie. My doe was a bit small and I owed some people some venison. I'll be trying it if I can get another one down.

Had 2 does at under 5 yds on Monday night, but I waited, in hopes that there was a buck pushing them. No such luck. Tomorrow am is it for me. Buck, Doe, whatever....and this time I mean it!

Not heading out opening day. Just not a "gun guy". Might go bow on a small private lot Sunday. See if the Orange Army pushes anything to me.

What was everyone else's take on the season? the rut? regrets? personal victories? etc...
