I am thinking about setting up a mantis in a 20 long that I have laying around. What type of mantis well be ok in that? Also what type of lights would I need just for him and live rock ? Please help a mantis newbie.

You could keep almost any mantis you want in there. People say a full grown peacock will break a 20L though. I would try it. I keep a N. Wenn in my 25T reef set-up and they stay small so I have no worries. You can use regular lighting for just the mantis or get a small PC to add some Zoo's and shrooms. Run a search in this forum there are tons of newbie answers on here.

they sure can, read blueboard about mantis shrimp. They say some full grown species have the same volocity of a .22 caliber bullet. I have never heard of someones mantis cracking the tank or seen pictures but alot of people will not take a chance and only house them in acrylic tanks. I'm sure it can happen though they can rip through hard shelled crabs in one blow. check out this link http://www.blueboard.com/mantis/ also check out this video of a mantis feeding on a crawfish http://www.grimreefers.com/forums/index.php?download=20 there are a few choice words some would not use so your warned.

I keep a peacock in a 20gl long with 3lbs of live rock, pvc pipe, chocolate chip star, and varies types of macro algae for him to play in
