250 MH bulb

I just bought a 250 MH bulb which was apparently drop shipped from Hong Kong. It appears to be okay but it won't light up. My question is this...Are there different types of bulbs with a mogul base? The one I purchased has an ANSI code of M58, its a type T-15 E39 mogul base. It is a little longer than my old bulb but not sure if that means anything or not. I have no idea of the specifics of the old bulb other than it is a 250w 14K Hamilton. The 250 watt ballast is home made and has no case, I think the manufacturer is Magnetek. Just wanted to find out if I some how got an incompatible bulb before I send it back to Hong Kong.

I fire all kinds of 250's on my Hamilton Ballast...? Cap and Coil, dunno if it makes a difference. See if you can't try the bulb in other setups, to make sure.

Not sure if mine is a pulse start or not. How do I tell?

Like I said ballast doesn't even have a case its just the power/transformer and a capacitor???...wired together and bolted to my hood.

Hmm.. sorry, not the electronics expert.
If you don't mind my asking... where did you order it from that it drop ships from Hong Kong?! Was it a normal retailer? Don't have to name names if you don't want. For what we pay on new bulbs for this hobby, I've no qualms about sending one back if it doesn't fire perfectly (have returned quite a few Hamilton's to one local shop, because they wouldn't fire right). That's one of the reason's I'm an advocate of saving at least 1-2 spare bulbs when doing changes.. you never know when that spare w/ 6-mos. burn on it will come in handy.
Digital Prep, eh? Small world... ;)

The large online auction place. Didn't realize it was coming from Hong Kong but the price was too good to pass up. 22.00 with shipping. Not a major bulb manufacturer though. I'll give you the link if you want

Oh yea it seemed to be packed pretty well too. The standard box holding the bulb, wrapped in bubble wrap and then placed in a plastic (rubbermaid) type with lid and then wrapped in packing paper. Don't know if you can tell if they are bad by looking at them unless element inside tube is broken which mine is not.

Yeah, aside from tramatic failure, it's hard to spot a problem. Best advice I can give is try it in a few different setups, to ensure it's not your ballast/wiring causing the problem.

I just ordered 2 bulbs from the same place. My mistake was I ordered 1 10k and 1 20k. The 20k would not fire. I have 175's so I couldn't get anyone on the site to test it. I have run 14k's so I figured it was the bulb. The guy was great and sent me another bulb right away and he even sent me a 10k like I needed. No questions asked. With service like that I will definitely order from them again. Yes and the packing was superior. I suggest contacting him and telling him.

Sorry I didn't see your post looking for a tester for a 175, I could have helped you out...I have both.250s and 175s

Can anyone in the Rochester area help me out with a test on a 250W MH Mogul type bulb? My old bulb still lights so the ballast is apparently okay.

upon further examination

Upon further examination I see a couple of differences between new bulb (top) and existing Hamilton. As you may be able to see in photo, the Hamilton has a transistor-like electrical component connected to the base of the bulb element, there is also an additional thin flat stainless band going from the base of the element to the glass portion on the bottom. I am assuming these two bulbs require a different type of ballast. Anyone here know the nomenclature for this Hamiliton. I don't want to order the wrong bulb again to replace it The new bulb is a ANSI type E-Rated 250Watt M58 tubular lamp. Spec sheet that came with it says it T-15 bulb type Mogul E-39 no visible name brand. What type of ballast is require for this type of bulb? Is this a bulb some else can use?
