280 gallon tank thread....

Thanks for the comments on the fish, they are all doing great! Have had my idol now for a year and 4 months.... Only problem ever had was with the powder blue and gold rim just didn't like each other. The achilles and powder get along fine they do every so often flash at each other but i think they both know who's boss!

Thanks bluenassarius, its all gone now don't know who to thank for that.

Well as i thought i would be bouncing back into things, the house im renting is up for sale and now gotta move in two weeks to another house. So this is going to be a pain in the butt but could thing i just have fish and no corals yet so should help. Only thing im worried about is losing my delicate fish in the transition. Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

Im thinking on having about 100 gallons of new saltwater at the new house ready to go and use the rest of the water from tank. I also will be using this time to clean my pumps and maybe change the rocks around and might even try to re-introduce my gold rim tang and see if that can work. I also want to get a new skimmer and another tunze or vortech pump. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Im trying to keep it under 1500... Want it to big enough in case i get the upgrade itch for atleast 500 gallons ha ha

Some skimmers i have my eye one:

Reeflo Orca 250 $1,250 300-800 plus gallons

ATB Medium Cone Skimmer $1,200 480 gallons

ATI Bubble Master 250 $840 500+ gallons

H&S In Sump 250 x 2 1260 $1,600 700 gallons

Wow, that does sound like it's going to be a LOT of work. Hopefully you can find some help. I'm going to be going through that as well, just on a much much much smaller scale! GL and let us know how it turns out

Thats tough to say.

The problem is that you are comparing apples to oranges. You cannot look at skimmers in terms of price. You must look at them in terms of body size and air draw.

The H&S and Reeflo are bigger skimmers than the ATB and ATI. Personally, I'd remove the ATI from the list, but thats JMO.

The reeflo is the largest and most powerful of the bunch, but can't be run externally. The second is the H&S. The ATB would be my choice, but the medium won't be enough for 500 gallons IMO. The Large or XL would be what you want.

Good luck dude! Keep us posted!

Thanks for the input jim, im thinking on going with the reeflo 250... i like the ATB but the price is little to much for me right now. I really need a new skimmer as my asm g4x has been on the decline and my tank has been showing it. Also thinking on going with another tunze to add more flow for my achilles.

Personally, I'd just watch the for sale boards and see what deals come up. I got my H&S A200-2x1260 for $1000, and I've seen several of the Reeflo's come up lately. You're not likely to get see ATB as so few people have those yet, but killer deals abound right now.

Yeah, the price on the ATB's is high. It is what it is unfortunately :(

But the reeflo and H&S seem like your best bet from the choices.

I'd do just like Jt mentioned. Cruise the FS board and find something used. There are always great deals out there. Be careful who you buy from though. Often times skimmers get damaged in transit and most of the time its hard to get your money back from either the person or shipping company.

The problem with shipping is the biggest hazard. I had UPS destroy a nice, heavy duty Austin Oceans skimmer and got bupkis for it as they claimed it was packaged incorrectly, even though I had them inspect it before I sealed it up.
As for that, have the seller use Fedex and have Fedex package it. The extra 12.99 that it costs will insure that they cannot use that excuse to get out of paying for it.

You're welcome to come over and see my Reeflo 200 in person if you'd like before deciding to drop the cash.

Thanks for the invite pete will have to fine time to stop by work the next two days then taking a mini vacation to L.A for the rest of the week. How do you have it running externally or in sump?

wow this tank is awsome, i want your idol! lol. this move sounds like its gunna be a huge ordeal i hated switching stuff over from the 55 to the 135, and tat was all in the same room i cant imagine what you have to do : /

Yea its going to be a pain but hopefully i can get it done in a day... Hopefully can come up with a plan that will make the move go smoothly.
