280 gallon tank thread....

I have come to really like the 2 island design. Keeps a nice area in the middle open and also allows for good flow all around both areas.

Problem with the rocks all on top of each other is it is hard to get flow all around the rocks. Also allows for you to get in behind there to get anything that might fall off and behind or between.

Like looking at your tank from the top and drawing an S with 6" on each side of the line.

When I go MH and rescape the design I am looking at.

Nice setup! Those are nice huge pieces of LR.

Yep! some good pieces the biggest flat one is a base rock made from reeferrocks thing was heavy i can see a nice place for bed corals to grow nicely..

I know the pictures arn't great but im still wondering if i should add a little more rock.. I believe i have about 50 pounds of base rock/ 90 pounds of marshall island and 120 pounds of fiji in the main tank and 10-15 pounds of base rock/ 15 pounds of fiji and 5 pounds of marshall in the refuge...?

I also went to walmart they don't carry those fans anymore since its winter but i found them online on home depot thanks gabe!

Seems like i can't get a reply finally some better images hopefully these will help me out....

Right Side: As you can see i dropped that 40lb base rock and it scratch my front man havent even had it setup for more then a month and already got a fat scratch!

So how did i do?

So i will be adding more rock about 45 pounds to build up the center or right side...
I ran a few tests todays to see how things are coming around
Salifert Test Kits:
Ammonia: 0
Salinity: 1.025
PH: 7.9 (little low any ideas?)
Nitrite: off the charts
Nitrate: off the charts
ALk: Couldnt understand how to read any out there can give me some tips..
mag/cal/phosphate will test later

My first reef tank never did this much testing with my fowlr so any tips would be helpful thanks!

Hello Yoboyjdizz,

Is great to see that you are setting up your tank. I think some time ago, I saw a thread in which it seamed like you were going to have to sell it even before you even had a chance to get it wet and that is always sad to hear/see.

Any ways, here you are with this beautiful tank and looking better by the day. I really like the islands, the caves and the platforms. If the pocket allows, a little more rock could be of use. Never mind, I see that another 45#s are on the way.

In terms of your chemistry, I would think that your tank is simply going trough its cycle. Maybe a little bacteria addition, macroalgae in your refugium or a water change may help in inproving your chemistry. Another thing that comes to mind would be seeding your tank with a little bit of live sand from other fellow reefer's tanks. You can always trade sand cups with them (they give you a cup of their live sand and you give them a cup of your new/clean sand). You are more than welcome to get some from me, but I am not sure the 3-4 hour round trip drive would be worth it for some sand, but if you are in SF any time, just give me a call or PM and I'll give you some.

Scratches on acrylic are just part of life, but you are very fortunate to have Mr. MarcDaniels just around the corner, in your area. Ask around and you will find that every one who he has worked with in removing scratches from their tanks, have been very happy with his work.

You are sorrounded by great people that are incredibly knowledgeable, so continue your humbleness (keep asking questions) and listen to what they tell you. They will save you lots of head aches.

I wish you smooth sailing with your set up and keep the good work up and of course, the pictures comming.

Again, I am very happy to see you are setting up your tank!

Thanks maynor! Yeah i almost did have to let it go but i held on and 7 months i was finally able to give a go..

Yes more rock will be here tomorrow then will do a water change early next week.. Im in need of come chateo wondering if john at your reef has some???

Yes the people are great hopefuly join this coming year and get to go to a few meatings its just hard im in folsom fridays just im usually playing flag football..

I also remember hearing how good mr. daniels was with tanks but havent seen him around here laltly....maybe if pops up he can give me some advice!

I added the 45lbs of extra rock well its probably only like 40 pounds will have pictures up later tonight... Also had a question should i be running my phosphate reactors now or until test show phosphate in my aquarium...?

They have been swiming like crazy in this new tank. They are loving the new tunze streams.. Guess we got to watch out for the clown police now haha!
