i am doing two forty gallons side by side that will have two 400w MH. i would say go for it.

We've got 400W 10K XMs over our 150, and the zoas love it. There are obviously certain ones that like to be further down in the tank, if not almost burried in the sand bed, but some of them have shown EXPLOSIVE growth and coloration with the intense lights.
Just be careful to acclimate them. And as stated before, try not to get them right underneath. The closest ours come to the light is about 20" (lights are 10" off the water, and the zoas are 10" below the water). Some have been higher, but that tang likes to play jenga with our zoas.

I have a 24" deep 90g with a 400w 10K on a light rail. The bulb is maybe 6" from the water. This light is too much for zoanthids in the top half of the aquarium.
The zoanthids that are more than half way up have spread only in the shade or on vertical surfaces, where they spread rapidly. On horizontal surfaces they shrink and disappear. At half way down I have some spreading on horizonal surfaces but they are tightly packed and not very extended. Below half way they grow normally.
