I got this shrimp today at a LFS labeled a 'Michaels Pistol Shrimp'.

Hacent heard of it before but something about those purple claws made me get it...

Question is: Does this go by any other name?

Is it a true pistol shrimp?

And most importantly, will this group up with a watchman's goby if I add one in later?

(Correct me if I'm wrong but arent Watchment Gobies the most colorful of the shrimp Gobies? If not what are other colorful ones you can recommend which will pair with this pistol shrimp?)

Thanks!

just saw one at my LFS and they had it clasified as a Solomon Island pistol shrimp, no specific species name was given and none knew.

Its common name is the Michaels pistol shrimp. It is a true pistol, but it will not pair with a goby. I have had mine in my 260 for 4 years. They hide ALOT, so dont bank on seeing him much once he makes a home, unless he is in a nano.

Also called the bull's eye pistol. I too had one with a YWG...never paired up. Came out for food only, making his appearance an "ooo, ahhh" moment. Pretty cool looking guy.

I have one also, definitely a bullseye pistol shrimp (Alpheus soror). VERY shy, although mine has become more brave in the past few weeks. I have an orange-spotted watchman goby and they occupy opposite ends of the aquarium. I think they are one of the few (or only) pistol shrimp that don't pair up with shrimp gobies. Check out liveaquaria.com for more info. Reef-safe and really cool (except when you hear them clicking their claw @ 3:00 am). Also, with any luck, yours will only become more vibrant; as mine has since introduced into the tank.

I have one with my yellow watchman. They have been together for about a year. The only time I see either one of them is when I feed, and even then, they come out get a piece of food and go back in the rocks within a couple of minutes. Kinda sucks. Not worth the money if you ask me

Wow thanks for the info all! This is why I love RC...tons of people with great info! Thanks guys I think he's pretty cool too :D

He's in 20g nano so hope I'll be able to find him around, kinda sucks that he won't pair with a goby though cause that's the main reason I got him but that's ok ....the purple in him definatley makes up for it!

Will he fight with another pistol shrimp if I get one which actually does pair???

A LFS around here has one with a yellow watchman and they paired up and you see them working together all the time.

We have one and a orange-spotted watchman goby. They didn't pair up, but the goby paired up with a tiger pistol that we have also. Both Tiger and Bullseye get along fine.

Bullseye pistol shrimp I have had one for two years now I do not see him very often maybe at night when the lights go out. Usually larger pisto; shrimp like this do not form relationships with gobies but it might. Yours should be fine with another pistol shrimp I have 3 in my 135 gallon 1 bullseye, 1 red pistol and 1 tiger pistol shrimp all three of them have their own area of the tank but I rarely see any of them I just hear them when I feed the fish

Thanks for the input!

I think I'm going to try and find a YWG and add him in, if he doesnt pair I'll go for another pistol...

(Can you believe a lfs wanted $40 for a small YWG !!!???...I want one, but can't justify that!)
