I have recently purchased 2 max/clams and have them about 1" from the surface. When I do a water change they will be out of the water for 5-10 minutes. Is this bad?
thanks

how far from the VHO's are they. They need a lot of light from a VHO, but not necessarily that close to the surface, would move them down 2 inches or so, and they should be fine, wouldnt leave them out for too long, even 5-10 minutes repeatedly could stress them out-Guru

Somebody needs to go and visit an exposed reef flat ;)
Clams can survive for several hours out of water. I have seen literally hundreds of clams (mostly maximas) exposed at low tide, some for as long as 4 hrs. I don't think you will have any problems with them being that close to the lights and there should be no problem with them being out of water unless you leave the lights on and the water they hold in their shell during "low tide" is heated.

The only drawback is you can't see the beautiful color of the clam that close to the surface unless you're lights aren't in the way and aren't reflecting in a way to make the clam un-viewable.

I had my Maxima near the top myself, but it jumped to my substrate and is simply gorgeous!

thanks guys, well I placed them up that high to make sure they get enough light. They are on a arch that rises close to the surface. I can see them good enough as they are on a angle.
Firechild, what you said makes total sense to me. I have seen clams exposed when the tide is out (in pic's) but just wasn't sure what type they were.
I got these clams last week and it was 35 below here. The sender also lives in Canada and said it would not be a problem. He then sent them as aquarium rock and when they arrived the water temperature was 65 degree's. I didn't think they would make it, but they are looking pretty good and extending their mantles. I got a 5" and a 3". The 5" is looking better then the small one. I've been feeding the little one with DT's every other day in it's own container.
I was really disappointed in the colors, as they are basically brown with a few blue lines. I had ordered ultra grade...but this is what happens a lot of time ordering things.
thanks again
