A trapped fish, a sick fish, new rock and some tank pics.

Well, I got the last of the rock I took possession of about 6 weeks ago into the tank tonight. Thought I'd throw up way too many pics.

Included are pics from the end of the tank as the fish chase me across, a pic of my yellow-lined wrasse trapped in the overflow, some general tankscape pics and finally some shots of my sick powder brown. Now that I have all the rock in the tank I'm hoping to let him settle down and get better, but I'm still considering setting something up for him to get better.

The powder brown is the only one showing anything, as far as I can tell. I don't really have a place to QT. Space is a real problem. I've I've been reading and reading on this. Wondering what else I can do that might be effective.

Do something fast or else your tank inhabitants are doomed! Freshwater dips, adding a u.v. Sterilizer would help also. You need to stay on top of your tank maintenance. Hope this helps. . .

OK< I really want to do something. I really do. I just have no ability to set up a QT at all. I am on top of this tank like you wouldn't believe. I've been systematically running through everything I can find to do short of the QT. If I could do it, I would, honestly.

Please help with suggestions.

To help your fish. From the pics IMO, the fox has white spot as well

read the ICK thread

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1990809

What I would do if QT is not an option

1) 1st keep stress down. No more hands in the tank moving stuff around for awhile / until white spot appears gone for an extend period say 2 weeks
2) Selcon and Garlic soaked mysis and feed often 2 to 3 times per day. Use your judegment, do not polute the water / spike nitrite (monitor parms)
3) Lower your lighting / do your fish have a place to hide ?
4) If this is FOWLR you have options with copper (I do not recommed copper in display tank, ever)
5) You can try Chem-Marin Stop Parasites. You need to monitor PH and buffer
6) You can try Tropical Science Biolabs Marine-Max
7) Try 5 or 6, but not both, IMO they do not cure white spot. Just optimize conditions for your fish to try and fight it off
8) if your fish die, consider 8 weeks with no fish (fallow) to let the whitespot die off. Start over and QT / treat as you go

I recently had a fish with ich. I was told by a fellow reefer that ich is aweful but not the end of the world. He told me to turn up the temperature of the tank to 80 degrees (since I have coral) or 81-82 degrees without corals and increase the amount of feedings to 3-4 a day, using the garlic substitute they advised above. This really helped me and I have seen this guy cure ich like it is nothing. He even buys fish with ich and cures them using this method. This is only my opinion and may or may not work for all. But I have seen this work several times now!

Why can't you set up a qt? It doesnt have to be a Glass tank, it can be a food grade rubbermaid type container with a heater.
Good luck

it seems like ich and tangs are magnet to ich since they get stressed out quickly. i took care of this issue by feeding all my fishes pellets soaked with garlic extract, it helps alot and my tang survived, i perffer pellets since they absorb garlic extract better. besides that qt your fish, don't waste money on buying reef safe ich cure formulas they just don't work.

Just like reef safe meds.....garlic won't work either....you didn't take care of the issue, you just got lucky and the parasite has moved offed the fish temporarily.

Agreed...if you have room for a 6' tank, and plan on keeping a healthy population of fish, you'll find room for a QT. A bedroom, basement, garage or back porch are all places a QT can be. It doesn't have to be pretty or expensive, just functional.

Fed 4-6 times a day with garlic and Zoe added to most feedings. Talked myself down from panicking.

thanks for the update. I could use some good news

I was also going to mention. For Tangs to help increase there well being they love seaweed

Clips or rocks. I feed Ocean Nutrition Seaweed Select , it comes in green, brown and red with garlic in it.

Hope everything's OK, James.

I have been giving some Nori soaked with the same mixture as well. I put it in in the morning before I leave for work and it's usually gone by the time I get home.

I'm glad things seem to have turned around.

Both observations are true to a degree. I decided after much thought and research to concentrate on healing my fish instead of creating chaos and more stress on this fish as well as the other fish by tearing apart and chasing the fish across the 6 feet of my 180 just to stress him out more by catching him and putting him in an environment that was less suited to his health.

All the rest of my fish are still healthy. The PBT is coming back. I hope both of those facts remain true. After much reading and much advice, this was the path I chose. It seems to be working. ICH is an opportunistic parasite. When the immune system of a fish is compromised, the parasite can do its damage. One of the most effective ways to compromise a fish's immune system is by subjecting it to stress. Given my situation (1 sick fish, 9 fish showing no signs of infection) I chose to reduce stress, feed for energy to fight the parasite, and hope for the best.

I know that the ICH parasite is still in the tank. I'm creating an atmosphere where it will have difficulty doing damage because the fish are able to resist it. When weighed against tearing down my tank, catching 10 fish (9 that are not sick), setting up a QT to medicate non-sick fish, and then putting it all back together again...well, that just didn't make sense.

This was a course both recommended to me and endorsed by some of the most knowledgeable reefers (both hobbyists and professionals) I know. And at this point the efforts are paying off. My fish is no longer as terribly sick as he was. I'd think folks would be happy about that, but maybe not.

We all know PBTs and other tangs are very susceptible to stress. That's a big reason they are ICH magnets. In my opinion, catching and moving that fish to a QT tank would have been a death sentence. I decided to go another way.

Sounds like you have a good thing going! Keep us updated! There is a wealth of knowledge on here and you have to take the bashers with a grain of salt. Not saying they don't know what they are saying, because they do, but they all seem to think we are idiots if we don't do everything THEIR way.
