acceptable nitrate levels?

The acceptable range as recommended by Knop is not more than 2 mg/L. (Knop, 166)

It is difficult to measure such a small amount of nitrates with any accuracy. I keep high clam densities, so I shoot for around 5mg/L.

It's really up to you to decide. Much of the material written on clams is very vague, since most are observations based on experience and not scientific studies with controls.

"36 G bowfront reef
80 lbs live rock,
55w pc ,
2 402's on natural wave
sea clown skimmer
some corals and a baby blue maxima"

Man, please, PLEASE tell me you are getting more light than that really, really soon. Your maxima is going to slowly decline and die under 55 watts of PC. Maximas need MH.

I'm not trying to ridicule you or anything, I'm just very concerned for your clam and I do not want him to die needlessly because of insufficient light.
