algae in overflow

I was giving my tank a 3 month overhall and found a thick carpet of green algae growth at the top of my overflow. I figure I must be doing something wrong for this growth to appear. What should I be doing?

This might seem like a stupid question but could I yank out that algae
and feed it to my algae eating fish? Should I leave it alone and prune - is there a benefit to keeping it?

I get it also in my overflow, I think everyone does. There is no benefit to keeping it, it will only grow and grow. I would pull it out. I wouldnt want to have it in the main tank since the spores from it could spread it.
Hair algae is caused from extra nutrients in the tank or high phosphates.
