an ID please

Can anyone identify the coral that is below the mushroom? It came as a hitch hiker when got this piece of rock in March. When I got it, it was about 1/8 inch. Now it is about 1 1/2 inches across. It is greenish in color, has a centrally located mouth surrounded by tenticles. When lights are off it shrinks down to about 1/2 inch. Thanx!

hmm.. not really sure.. almost looks like a head of candy cane in the first pic but in the second pic it doesnt look like it at all.. hopefully someone else can help you out. Cool hitchhiker.

When I first got it, I thought it was candy cane. I don't think candy cane has tenticles.

Candy canes have tentacles. Sorry I can't ID it, but I think it'll be much much easier to give a better guess once it starts spreading across the rock.

Yup candy canes do have tentacles, but I don't think it is that. Looks like either a scolymia or cynarina.

it does look like a candy cane, however, candies are nightime feeders and that is when its tentacles are out.. so if its open in the day and closed at night.. it isnt a candy cane, it sure looks like one though.

Candycanes will feed day or night and even day and night...it all depends on when their odds of getting food are best...I've trained mine to put their feeders out about an hour befor the main lights go out...it's like they are on a timer now..

As far as the coral...I think it's probably still too young to determine. However it looks to me like some kind of brain...like a Trachyphyllia...or it could be some a scolymia or cynarina...it's just too small to tell as of yet.

Yup, mine come out an hour or two before the main lights go off. Which is when I usually feed my fish.

RicksReefs-Sorry I took so long to respond. Here is a foto of my coral closed up. unfortunately, it has been like this for 3 days now. I don't know what the problem is because all the other corals look pretty happy (except my trachyphillia). Do you still think that this is a scolymia?

I'd still say Scolymia, but it could be a tiny Trachyphyllia starting out too. maybe a settled bud of the one you already have (?).

I just got the trachyphillia last week. The rock that this came on I got last March (I bought it for the blue anthelia) so I guess it is a true hitch hiker. LOL
