Animal Planet #Tanked

It's been on here lots of times. I watch it, but it's a dumb show.

The complaint around here is their lack of animal husbandry skills. They're fish tank builders, not marine biologists. For example, they did one tank, probably in season one, that they filled with maybe 100 Damsels. Most Damsels are very aggressive and will fight with each other until all but a few are dead.

That's what you're dealing with.

Ah gotcha. I've never seen the show before so good to know. Was just enamored by the ads and the glimpse of all the interesting fish they had. I was also told the spot they pick up their fish from is in LA? Would love to check it out sometime.

Another question is, I always do research before buying livestock so I do know about territorial fish, compatibility list & suggested stocks- however, my girl was asking and I don't have a clear answer in that how come LFS always seems to have an aquarium full of lets say all sorts of clowns, or all sorts of damsels, or varieties of tangs in small tank?

Is it because their water parameter, flow is to the most ideal level? or is it just because their turnover on selling/dying fish is frequent.

The wholesaler they feature in the show is Sea Dwelling Creatures (SDC). It is a wholesaler so only stores are allowed to buy or even go in the premises.

Their fish are not there long enough to establish territory. For more expensive fish, they have a dedicated holding tank space for each. For cheaper kinds like damsels, they put them together because of economies of scale, too expensive to house each damsel in a separate area, but they have to carry a lot because of demand.

Fish stores create a lot of stress for fish for exactly that reason and others. Just because a store does it does not make it acceptable. They will also sell you just about any fish you want even if it is totally unsuited for your tank. There are a few exceptions, but none that I know of very close to NB.

they put together some nice concept tanks but not necessarily very well. That's a fact btw. And I find there business ethics very questionable. I don't bother bc I don't think they promote anything close to good husbandry. Just my .02

I know many of you deal with SW fish but they had a show where they did a FW tank for Dwight Howard and it was depressing to watch:

I understand that a lot of these celebrities don't really care about how fish get along with one another or how they adapt to their environment, but as a business (the tanked people), they should be advocates for better living quarters for their living creatures, since they get to do these amazing tanks!

I remember I had to turn the channel because my wife said I was complaining at the tv too much, lol.

They do make some great tanks though.

I think that episode aired last week? i usually watch it just to get ideas on designing tanks... changed channel real fast when i saw it was for Howard.

You may know this already, but one account of how ATM tanks hold up over time and how ATM responds to the failure of the tanks they build can be seen at nineball's build thread beginning at post #838 http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2096730&page=34.

not a pretty picture at all. I was working my way through that build thread, admiring the tank and the care and energy lavished on it, when this post burst my bubble....
