Another use for IO?

Hi Dr Ron

To say the least, I was fascinated, shocked and horrified at your findings.Thank you so much for doing this test.
I was wondering if instead of deicing your driveway with the IO(Instant Oblivion....I shouldn't have said that:D ), if there might not be a better use for it.
"so the larvae seen in the waters made from these two salts are the hardiest of the hardy survivors. "
Wouldn't using IO to hatch larvae be useful to "cull" out the weaker specimens and thereby keep the population of that particular species stronger?? I would think you would have to switch to the better salt mixes to raise the larvae, but for initial hatching use the IO.
I say this in the event that we ever get good at breeding these beautiful aquatic creatures that we love, we could weaken the population by overprotecting the weaker ones that might not be genetically fit. I realize this may sound harsh and cruel to some readers, but in nature "only the strong survive"
Any merit to my theory??
Thanks
Jim

Hi Jim,

Well... survival of the fittest. That would pretty much describe any reef tank using the salts presently.

It is worth noting that subsequent to the test, I let several beakers of embryos go on with development. All those in the salts with the lowest survival did not survive beyond another couple of days. Those in the better salts survived about 2 weeks.

I don't think you could use the salts to breed "hardier" animals, as I don't think you can get most animals to breed at all in them...

:D

Darn!! Another mediocre idea down the drain! Might as well pour some IO on it so it won't breed either:D :D

Thanks for the reply.
Jim
