Trying to get my hands on a sea hare to help out with a hair algae problem. Its not getting worse but not getting better either. Anyone know any stores that carry them?

Just a suggestion. That's where I got the one I had. It was the only place I had seen them in the area.

I am going to be up that way tonight to pick up some router bits from sears across the street. I'll stop in and see what they got. Do they offer discounts for DVRC members?

yes, I believe its 10%. You will need to talk with either John, or Bob to get the discount, since our cards arent ready yet. If they have a problem, tell John to call me- he has my #.

They actually had a sea hare and I picked him up last night. Dripped him for about two hours then floated for temp until it was equal. Dropped him in the tank in the dark. When I looked this morning, I couldn't find him. Hopefully he comes out and starts eating, there is plenty of food for him.

I saw mine for about a week....that was two years ago. I'm assuming it bit it, and the snails cleaned him up....although I also wouldn't be suprised If it just showed up someday.

IMO they are a waste of money. Your water needs to be perfect if you have a PO4 problem they do not last very long. You need to be carefull also. Some sea hares have ink. If they release it it could cause a problem. Just get a handfull of mexican turbos and check your P04. Use a meter when measuring.

I think they all have ink. I've heard they release it when there disturbed or when they die. I never saw mine ink, which is why I think theres a slim chance it's still in there.....I have no more hair algae....but also no signs of the sea hare....there cool, but I don't know if mine took care of the hair algae or my phosban.

If you're looking to get another one, ECA had 3 as of this Friday.

I had a sea hare last year that got caught up with a powerhead. It was shredded to pieces in my tank and luckily I had no casualties. Lucky me...

He was good for about a week and then kicked it. Not sure what happened, everything else was fine. Never inked, just found him upside down and shriveled up. I was running a phosban reactor before him and it still did not clear up my algae. I am starting to think I have some sort of indestructable HA. I actually had my stuff sitting in bins with 0 light for the past week and there is still a lot of HA on the rocks.

As Jay mentioned, Mexican Turbo snails...they're huge and go to town on HA. The biggest PIA about them is that they tend to know over corals if they're not attached...

Back on sea hares, do they need lighting? I think I may of found out why mine died since there was very little light in the holding bin once I put him in there. It took about a week I think.
