Any regrets getting the tek light hood

I'm about ready to make a purchase and wanted to hear from the owners of the 48" Tek Light 6-54W T5 HO hood. Any regrets? I would like to purchase the retrofit kit but for the extra $140 seems to be out of my range. I know that i would have more options later on but I'm not sure if I need it. I like the feature of an open top and I plan on hanging it so I can lift it out of the way. Just wanted to hear any opinions.

Thanks - V

I have the tek four tube version over a 75. It works quite well, but I do have some quibbles.

1) The existing actinic offerings aren't all that impressive. Wait for the URI's that are supposed to be out any day now.

2) Go with the regular GE 6500K for the daylight bulbs and save money.

3) The six and eight tube units really should have more than two switches so that you have the ability to incorporate a high noon cycle if desired.

Those and the pricing are really the only problems I have with these. Seems kinda nutty to me that you end up spending upwards of 50% more on top of the basic fixture cost just to load it with tubes.

Rather than sound like just a complainer, I will say that I do love how cool and quiet the fixture runs. The xenia and crocea both love it, but I've had to move a monti up closer to the light. (I'm running two 10k's and two actinics.) I've got a pair of the ge 6500k's due to arrive this week and one will be going in place of a 10K for starters.

In retrospect, I probably should've gone with a a six tube setup since I'm such a fan of clams and sps, but in my opinion, that much power draw and expense makes a pair of 175w HQI's worth strongly considering. I actually just scored a great deal on a used pair of 250's I'm considering trying out on this tank just for giggles. :D

Oh, and don't waste your money on the splash shield. It's just a cheap piece of plexi and not needed.

Cheers!
Dan

I have a 6 tube 24" Tek-Light and love it. I've had no problems growing anything in my 37. I even have a Maxima on the bottom of the tank that is growing nicely.

Thanks for the replies. If you run the hood without the splash guard do you have any problems with salt creep? Also does anyone use the legs? I'm thinking of suspending it and whenever I need to do any maintance just pull on the chains to lift it up. Can that be done with the suspension kit.

I don't have the splash sheild and don't have a problem with salt creep. I also have the legs. I did have to tighten them up using pliers to keep them from slowly lowering, but after tightening them good I haven't had any problems.

LOVE THEM!!! Runs cooler, brighter, quieter and more energy efficient. What more can you ask for? Everyone seems to be getting the best prices from SeedsEtc.com including the bulbs.

Ooops - on the suspending thing - I didn't go for the hanging kit, but have mine suspended by bungie cords. The fixture comes with large v's on each end that you slip into the eyelets, and it would be trivial to hook whatever you wanted into that to hold the lights up out of the way when doing maintenance.

Hth,
Dan

On the seedsetc site its this item# 960005 not this item# 960095, right? But at reefgeek, for $309 they have 3 free bulbs. Are the bulbs that they are giving away not useful?

i have the6x54 hanging over my 75, no splash guard but the top of the tank has a full glass cover. i'm VERY happy with it!

They're pretty good, but have a yellow tint to them. As long as you offset it with enough blue they will work.

I have two TEK fixtures and am very pleased with them. No noise, no hum, no hastles. I would not buy the splash shield, but get some acrylic from Dummy Depot and make your own. They do get dirty and require weekly cleaning (I have lots of water movement.)

I have a clam on the sandbed and it is doing very well. Plenty of light for my SPS as well.

I bought my 2 tek lighthoods with the mounting brackets, works like a charm. The splashguard is nice and like old salty says, you can get pieces cut to fit at HD for much cheaper. If you don't have much splashing on top of your tank or it is covered, you won't need the splashguard.

No complaints at all on my 4x39W unit.

Dug up my own acrylic shield from some scrap.

Just wish there were better T5 actinics out there.
