Any tanks built into "nitches"

I have a "nitch" in my living room that is intended for a mediacenter - of course I intend it for a built-in tank. I have a 55 in one.... but it is just sitting there. I want to make a built-in. The nitches are aprox. 5'x2'. I would prob have to get the tank custom made.

Anyone do this? Pics?

Mine isn't custom. It's just sitting there...

My nitch is 47" wide. Another 1.5" and I would of had a nice spot for a 75!

Sorry for the low water. I'm fighting aiptasia so I don't have it all the way full. Easier to reach in there...

What do you mean, 'handle the closed back end'??

I'm just getting a 47 x 18h x 15d made with under sump, sitting on 1 inch steel tube frame clad in birch, built into the 'niche' (as we call them in the UK) in my living room.

My 140 gallon tank is in a niche in the wall.. It doesn't take the full width and it's deeper than the niche though.

I am going to be mounting the canopy such that it's fully supported by the back wall and top of the niche. I'll be using plywood to construct the canopy and it will be fully sealed from the walls (ie I'm not relying on the walls as part of the canopy).

I placed mine about 3" from the back wall to accomodate plumbing, installation of a backdrop.

Here is a 150 that I built into the wall. The nitch was a little smaller (4') but we opened it up 2 more feet. Overall, it worked out great, but does get a bit warm in there. Think about installing an exhaust fan if you close it in.

I have an entertainment nook in the living room I've been thinking of converting..

it backs to the garage so I thought I could put in a door through the garage to access the back of the tank..

To be code correct it would have to be a fireproof exterior door.

No construction photos on this one, however, it's a very simple design. The tank is supported by a 2x4 stand with plywood on top and below (for the sump). The rest of the project is just face frames and doors. The tricky part was hiding the black aquarium frame without it looking bad. I made a 3D face frame on each side and top & bottom trim that is recessed a bit as well. Maybe you can see it from this pic?

Why does it need a fireproof exterior door? I know when my house is built I am having a tank built into a niche and it will have a door to access the back in a closet.

Most building codes state that you have to have a fire proof door between the garage and living space. That way if a fire starts in the garage it takes longer to get into the living space.
