Does anybody have breeding size clams, and has anybody seen there clams release mature eggs, I have seen alot of clams release sperm, but not eggs.

teh eggs are so microscopic that it might as well look like sperm so it might be a little confusing. I have a breeding size Crocea, my maxima is abotu an inch away from breeding size.

how big they have to be? the biggest i got is a 4" derasa, but if i wanted i could buy a 10" but i see no point in spending alot of $$$ on a clam

Crocea don't grow much bigger than 5 inches adn mature at around 3 inches. Maximas mature at around 6 inches and can grow up to 15 inches. Dreseas mature at around 5 inches and can grow up to 17 inches.

these clams require a lot of water volume to breed though which is why not everyone is not able to do it.

CaptiveReef-
Maximas 6-8" range are usually mature both male & female(they're hemaphrodites). Eggs are easily distinguishable from sperm.
Captive breeding is one of my interests. It is difficult and time consuming.

Clams

Clams

I know how big they get and they are both male and female, I have had my clams for 3 plus years. I was just wondering if anybody had adult size clams. :)
Question for Julio, you are an Aquatics Director where do you work?

I guess I wasn't entirely clear in my response. I have bred clams inducing spawning using serotonin injections. Maxima clams in the size range 6-8" are ususally mature both male and female. They are protandric hermaphrodites that mature male first(sperm) then female(eggs) later. Average age is about 5yrs for male maturity in maximas and then female maturity thereafter.
Maxima clams over 6" are approximately 5+ yrs old.
Large clams are available but also are expensive to ship. Example wild maxima 8" ships in 2gal water ~16+lbs.
Hope this helps.
