Has anyone in here ever be victim to the lethal blow of a mantis shrimp? I'm just curious if they live up to their reputation of being "thumb-smashers".
Dr. Ron (Gonodactylus) mentioned he has been given the bash (and the spear, not to mention the tail jab) literally hundreds of times.
Check out this link for some interesting details about the attack of the Mantis Shrimp. I was thinking about letting the larger of my two Mantis Shrimp smash me until I got the following information from "the good doctor":
There is a lot of information on this in the archieves. Try searching the mantis shrimp forum for any date and use the key word "stab". Several threads will come up including a couple that I started.
You know, I read the other post that the Doctor posted in about smashers stabbing and my eyes opened up. If he has that option, he hasn't used it. Whenever he hit, it was always a blunt strike.
He's gotten a little larger now, so I figured I'd stop while I was ahead.
Thanks Pnosko. My entire life I have been intermixing "Roy" and "Ron" no matter how many friends I have with either name. My brain simply refuses to distinguish between the two. No disrespect intended ... it is one of my many imperfections.
Sorry Dr. Roy. I will make every effort to get this straght.
I saw the kid at the LFS lose a fingernail when a 7" peacock took a crack at his finger. Dumb@$$ thought he could just stick his hand in there (thinking it would just run away like alot of other critters do when a hand comes in the tank)...that mantis wasnt about to give up any of his tank!!
