Anyone ever paint their stand black?

I have a stand that is pretty beet up, its gota be 20yrs old... pine, but poor quality wood...

I sanded the doors down and re stained but it looked no better than before (well slightly)

My question is how about painting it black? I tested the backside with a flat black, and it didn't look the greatest... maybe a satin or a semi gloss?

semi-gloss would be cool. are they set-up yet? i wouldnt spray paint around a tank dry or set-up tank. even if it were taped off. have a great weekend,

I USED RUST-OLEUM SEMI GLOSS BLACK
IN BETWEEN COATS I WET SANDED IT AND THE FINAL COAT I USED A CLEAR LAQUER.
IT TURNED OUT REAL WELL.
JUST TRY TO AVOID USING A PAINT BRUSH--USE A ROLLER--IT WORKED OUT A LITTLE BETTER FOR ME.

My last job dealt with a lot of custom woodworking. When I started the stand for my last tank (a room divider 55 gallon), I wanted a modern, sleek looking setup. I built the exterior from MDF, sealed the entire interior, and then primered the exterior. On top of this I added black, sanded with fine paper, black again, fine paper. To this, I added a few layers of clear lacquer, with sanding between each coat. Turned out extermely well.

Thaks for the advice... the stand is currently setup so I do not plan on using spary paint...

So people think a semi gloss would be good???

I'm not clear how you mean to paint then sand, and paint again... what does this accomplish??

Also what type of laquer would you use on paint? In the past i've seen laquer discolor paint

SANDING IN BETWEEN COATS WILL GIVE A MUCH SMOOTHER FINISH SO WHEN THE LAQUER IS APPLIED IT GIVES IT A GLASS LIKE APPEARANCE. I USE A CLEAR LAQUER AND IT IS PRETTY HARD TO DISCOLOR BLACK. ESPECIALLY THE RUSTOLEUM PAINT THAT I USE.

Here is a pic of a 75 gallon stand I built awhile back. the black looked really cool when the VHO's light up the tank. Very nice contrast in my opinion. I used semi-gloss for it as well.

Oh ya, about the discouloring, it is very hard to discoulor black paint with the laquer, i think i used the rustoleum brand for this, its been a few years, but that rings a bell. Semi Gloss for sure though

Very cool I am doing my new tank stand that I am currently building in semi gloss black as well glad to see it does have the potential to look realy nice. I am sealing everything with Kiltz 2 that I had tinted dark grey and then painting it with Behr Exterior Semi Gloss in black, I am not sure if I should clear coat it or not but it has passed over in my mind.

So in your redmonkey0019 in your pic you post you used black paint? that looks very good...

Did you use a roller? and sand between coats? and use any laquer?

YOU DONT HAVE TO SAND OR ANYTHING IF YOU DONT WANT. IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE TYPE OF FINISH THAT YOU WANT. IF YOU WANT TO SEE ALL THE GRAIN IN THE WOOD THROUGH THE BLACK---THEN JUST PAINT IT. IF YOU WANT A BLACK LAQUER TYPE FINISH YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT WAS MENTIONED ABOVE.
IT DEPENDS ON YOUR PREFERENCE. I DONT LIKE TO SEE ALL THE GRAIN WITH A BLACK FINISH.ITS UP TO YOU.

i didnt paint mine but i just built one and i stained it with minwax ebony...

i did two coats and then 2 coats of minwax polyurethane, sanded between coats of urethane...

however since it is pine and i forgot to use the wood conditioner...well not so much forgot as i was told since it is a black stain i wouldnt notice the difference i didnt use it...needless to say...i notice it..

it looks like a walnut cabinet now instead of pine...which is fine by me it actually looks kinda cool...not what i wanted at first but it has grown on me now...plus there is no way i am going to go through all the effort to strip and sand it to put the conditioner on now..

if you are going to stain it i wood sand it well and use a conditioner on it before applying stain...

if your gonna paint it then i would figure out what kind of finish is on it now and use the appropriate primer...then paint from there..

If the stand isn't painting well you might want to consider using a spray texturing on the stand. (They use that a lot when remodeling old apartments that have a lot of imperfections on the walls.

Just go with the expensive stuff, it will make a world of difference.

It costs like $18 a can for the expensive stuff... you might want to call a painting company that has large commercial blowers for texturing. It might cost you less, and take them 5 minutes.

I used a 3" brush, and a 2" brush on the whole thing. I worked very well. There are 2 coats of paint, and also a coat of laquer. The design worked well, and I really do like the black paint, it creates a good contrast to the bright colors

I am also doing a blk stand i will post new pics once i finish.. What i did is paint it flat blk... Sanded a few areas where the wood came thru then stained the exposed wood areas and no i am going to use a water based clear from RODDA paint semi gloss... I hate sanding dammit.......... you can se the stand in my gallery... almost done with the sanding....

I got the same results using the rustoleum semi-gloss spray paint on my 120gal stand and canopy. I have to agree that it looks great with the room lights off and vho's on! I was aiming to get the plastic glossy look but I was pleasently suprised with the way it turned out.

What did you do to finish off the interior of the canopy? I ended up using a gloss white finish to reflect more of the light back, I am looking at redoing the canopy cause I wasn't as happy with the way it works (never could get the vho reflectors to fit in it right). The 120 pic is in my gallery, feel free to critiqe it.

I finished the inside of the canopy high gloss white as well. I had the hellolights.com 46.5" VHO's so with the stand being just over 48" they fit in nice, sorry to hear that you had trouble with your reflector. What if you trimmed it down with some tin snips? Im making a new stand in the coming weeks for a new cube build im doing, making the tank and the stand...should be interesting, maybe I will do a thread on it.

I painted my stand & canopy black using rustoleum oil based paint. love the results, smooth and shinny! painted the inside with the same paint but white.
