Anyone ever use this nori/algae, and can anyone read korean?

In a post in the general reef forum it was confirmed that the one seaweed is wakame, and the other is kombu, a type of kelp. This is from the Wikipedia article on Wakame which I find interesting:

Wakame is a rich source of Eicosapentaenoic acid, an Omega-3 fatty acid. At over 400 mg/100 kcal or almost 1 mg/kJ, it has one of the higher nutrient:calorie ratios, and among the very highest for a vegetarian source. However, 100 grams of wakame is more than 44 tablespoons of dried wakame. The usual consumpton of wakame is closer to 1 or 2 tablespoons.[8] Wakame also has high levels of calcium, iodine, thiamine and niacin.

Hey Tad!

Hey Tad!

I saw that store listed in the phone book and online but I don't know if it's still there.

Perhaps someone can confirm?

Anyways .. How are you doing and watcha been up to?

Yeah, Asia Food Market is still there. They renovated the store within the past year or so. Now, when you walk in, you don't get immediately hit with the stench of meat and seafood. They moved it to the side of the store, and it doesn't really smell much anymore. This is about as authentic of a Korean market as you'll get in the US. You can buy all sorts of different stuff including frogs, fish heads (whole, or just the head), etc. My wife walked in there one time when she was pregnant with my son (about 3 years ago). She almost threw up and had to run out of the store because she couldn't handle the smell. :D

Anyways.........

I'd be VERY surprised if they didn't have a bunch of nori that you could use. If I had to guess, it would be down one of the aisles halfway between the cash registers and the frozen foods. This is the market that I buy food from when I make bulgogi, sushi, kai bi, etc. I bought some seaweed the last time I was there, but I don't know if it was flavored or not.

There used to be another small store on 15a, kind of near the Seoul Garden. It was closer to Jefferson Rd, right on West Henrietta Rd.

The Asian Food Market is now the closest thing to an Asian Wegmans. It has a bakery, fresh fish, vegetables and a butcher shop in addition to the huge selection of dry goods and frozen foods. Just make sure you get Nori that doesn't say seasoned.

They also serve hot food for lunches during the week. I haven't been in the area during the week to find out if it's good or not though.

The Hot food is excellent and best bang for the buck$ For $5.94 you can get Roast Pork/Duck, Soy Chicken, Roast Pig, Salted Chicken w/ vegetables over rice. Cheaper than some Chinese takeout places for more qty too.

On weekends they also sell some Dim Sum to go.

Sorry I got unsubscribed from this somehow.

Life is good. I'm living in St Louis working as an Entomologist at The Butterfly House where I have lots of tanks I take care of.... only none of them have any water in them. 1000s of butterflies and dozens of different species of insects and other arthropods.

I have struck up a friendship with the guy who maintains a local ~800 gallon reef tank at the Science Center and I'll probably be rolling up my sleeves with him pretty soon since he is pretty new and is running into many of the same issues I encountered when I started.

There are lots of LFS here, I live 30 seconds from a nice store that has loads of cool corals and cheap frags. I don't visit often because I don't have a tank now and it just makes me miss "my" old tank from the Museum.

If I ever end up helping with the tank at the science center I'll post some pics. We'll see if any of The Reef Shoppe rubbed off on me at all.

Cheers!

Hey Tad! What are you up to buddy? Glad to see you still around.

Hey Cully! How's life going brother? Things are good, just saw your message. I'm doing well here is St Louis, working at a butterfly house as an entomologist and staying busy. Just founded the Missouri Butterfly Monitoring Network so my big project for the summer is to coordinate a bunch of volunteers, government agencies and universities to get a large scale butterfly monitoring program going. As I told Gary M in the other message I might get to work in a big reef tank again soon which would be fun.

I miss my big tank in NY but I love my new job and am very happy things worked out how they did.

You can Gary M both, have any recent photos to share?

Cheers,
Tad
