Anyone interested in some calcium chloride and magnesium chloride?

I'm thinking of ordering a 50lb bag of magnesium chloride (Dead Sea Works Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate) and a 50 lb bag of calcium chloride (dow flake) as discussed in the RHF article HERE .

Needless to say I don't need a 50lb bag of either so I thought I'd see if anyone else would be interested. I'm mainly thinking of the magnesium chloride but getting dow flake would be good as well. I'm waiting on a shipping quote but the actual product is cheap (less than $15 for 50lbs). If there is anough interest I may even order more but let me know and I'll post when I get the shipping prices. I will probably be in for 20 or so lbs of each myself.

I'll probably be interested. I am using some commercial stuff now, but I'd like to try the homemade batch next. I'm not sure how many pounds I'd need with 140 or so gallons of system water. The recipe calls for cups so I'm not sure.

I'm not exactly sure on the magnesium chloride but the calcium stuff from local pool stores that weighs 10 lbs comes in a jug that is about 1- 1.5 gallons in size. Not sure if that helps or not. I've personally gone through a 10 lb jug of calcium in less than 4 or 5 months on my 375g (550g of actual water).

I am game for the Magnesium cloride (about 10-20 lbs) definitely and maybe the calcium cloride also, depending on shipping costs.

Clint. I have about 220 gallons or so of water, and a 10 lb container of CaCl lasts me about 6 months. I have 2 clams and getting more SPS all the time.

However, it is not water volume that counts. It is how many hard corals and clams you have that really count.

Yeah, I think I'd do good with 10 lbs. It would probably last me a year considering I have one clam and a handful of small SPS frags.

Very true. We have added a lot of coral recently and our need for calcium, alk and magnesium have gone way up. I use 1/4cup of calcium a day to keep up  .....guess we should really get the calcium reactor working huh?

Wow. You have gotten a lot. 1/4 cup/day is a lot of calcium usage. Maybe, we can trade frags someday.

Well, it's actually a little less than a 1/4 cup probably between 1 and 1.5 cups per week. I have a 1/4 cup measuring cup that I use as a scoop and it's not completely full.

I heard back on the pricing- for the magnesium chloride Looks like the cost will be $1.20 per lb after shipping and handling. The Dow flake calcium chloride will be $1.10 after shipping. that is actually cheaper than the stuff we get from the pool supply store and probably a better solution.

Anyway- just post if you are interested as I will be placing an order and need to know how many bags I should order- I imagine only 1 but we may have enough interested to get 2.

Scott,

Thanx so much for doing this. I would like 10 lbs of Mg and 10 lbs of calcium.

I would also like to get 10lbs of Mg for James Wiskey. He has indicated to me that he would like to buy the Mg.

Van.

Well, looks like there are quite a few people who want some. Guess I better turn this into a group buy thing. For now I will just put some names/amounts just to keep track of what the order is getting up to.
