Anyone use the 55g barrels that they sell on craigslist for mixing salt or holding ro water? any thoughts on them or tips?

I'm thinking of getting the gray ones in the picture below since the top is easily opened.

I use one. You need to be sure the barrel you are using is food grade. Mine was used for cherries once upon a time.

Verify that they are at least "food grade" barrels, if not available in new/unused condition! (barrels in photo are all used, but some may possibly be food grade which would be okay to use after a thorough cleaning)

Do not ever use barrels that have been used to contain chemicals or oil/hydraulic fluid type products.

I've seen this guy also.. Inquired to him about them and he said the Grey ones were used for olives if I remember correctly.. I want to get a few also but just haven't pulled the trigger..

I saw another one in the north bay a while ago that had 75g ones supposedly used for grapes but he seemed flaky plus I thought wine was made in wooden barrels lol..

I use two grey barrels with no issues. One for mixing salt and other for the waste water to water the backyard plants. No issues and easy to drill for drains

I'd be weary of using those for sw. I know most are food grade but i use them for my vegetable oil and some are pretty bad that I wouldn't even use to put fuel into

I ended up getting two of the gray ones he said that they were used for cherries, no visible junk on the sides or smell rinsed them a few times and soaked them over night with a water vinegar mix(not sure this will do anything but can't hurt).

Malster1 did you use bulkheads or uniseals or something else any pictures thanks?

i have two of the grey ones will be putting it in use this summer for my auto water change unit. It's currently soaking in vinegar and water for over 8 months
