They now carry this stuff at Petco in 5 gal. bags for $9.99 and it says it's the Catalina brand. I remember reading an article recently where they lab tested this water and it had very high levels of both lead and zinc. They said that could have been due to the exhaust from the engines of the ships during collection or perhaps the pipes they send it through.

A LFS in my area also carries the new Nutri-Seawater brand in 4.4 gal. jugs but they get $17.50 which is a rediculous price to pay for seawater in my opinion.

Has anyone tried the Catalina Seawater from Petco, and what's your opinion of this stuff compared to just mixing your own??

There is no way I would use this. Who knows how long it has been sitting in that box. So anything that that may have been alive is probably dead by the time it gets to someones house. Its like the live sand that they sell in bags, it just sits there for ever.

I use nothing but Catalina water, always have, but it's staight from the LFS.

Never any problems. In a box, I don't think I would, and that's expensive for 5 gallons. (9.99? )

Well the ones I saw at Petco actually had expiration dates on the boxes. They all said 'Use before 01/07'

I agree though that seems like a long time for "live" ocean water to be sitting on a shelf somewhere.

I used it in my 20g nano tank just because I wanted to make sure my salinity and pH were constant. $10 for 5 gallons isn't so bad when that's all you need for an entire water change. I used it for about 6 months before I got sick of the 20g and upgraded. I just happen to have 1 more box on hand, maybe in case of disaster or something.

I don't think it claims to be "live" ocean water? I thought it was just "real" ocean water, and sterilized or something.
