Anyone using Live Aquaria Reef Salt?

Just curious to see how it's working out for you.

It's currently on sale -- $38.99 for the 205 gallon box -- and if it compares to Reef Crystals then it's a good deal.

I won a free bag and just received it. It looks fantastic if it performs as advertised. If I get a chance I will send a fresh mix sample to triton and compare to known brands

DFS charges tax right?

I got a bucket of RC from Petsmart on black friday for $41 (tax included), and submitted the $10 rebate, so net cost is about $31. RC bucket is only 160 gallon though. They may still sell it at that price in store today. They still had like 5 buckets when I left the (fremont) store late friday night.

I would get the DFS if I did not get the bucket of RC.

I've seen some compare it to the Fritz RPM. This is a nice deal--if your order totals $125+, you receive a $50 DFS GC for a future purchase.

RC is a bit high on Alk. My Alk jumps to 10 when ever I had water changes. I had to stop dose for few days to let it lower to 8.5. I am looking for something has lower Alk.

If you can share the results that would be great!

Yes, they charge tax, but I expect it these days. When Petsmart had a sale before, I tried to buy salt but the stores closest to me each only had one bucket, so it become more trouble than it was worth for me. I'm lazy -- salt for a little more money delivered to my front door is my preference. :lol2:

I read the same thing--apparently even the boxes look similar to Fritz RPM. I ended up buying three boxes and some food to qualify for the GC, though it says it's not compatible with other promotions, so I hope I still get the GC!

That doesn't seem that bad. I can add some acid to bring down the levels if need be.

I tested it when it was released about a month ago. Very similar to Fritz parameters, except I found it didn't precipitate like Fritz did. But both Fritz and Live Aquaria mixed salt water dropped in Alkalinity over time if you store it, like from 8.5 dkh to 6.5 dkh in a week or two. So it's good for people if you use the salt mix right away, but if you plan to store or do automatic water changes, be careful with that. The parameters are great though. Mid to high 8 dkh, mid to high 400's Ca, a little high Mag around 1450-1500.

Well that's a bummer, good thing I held off on buying a bucket.

That's a very interesting point. I mix my salt every 2 months. I'll stick with regular IO which keeps the Alk levels. The only thing I ever notice is a very small drop in Mag, but it takes a couple months.

That's unfortunate that the Alk drops when sitting. I currently use IO and mix it ahead of time. Sounds like when I switch to LA salt I'll need to change my methods a bit. I guess I can use it for my anemone tank where Alk doesn't matter as much.

how much water change are we talking about.

given that alkalinity scale is linear
if 10% water change, the alk after is
8.5 * 0.9 + 6.5 * 0.1 = 8.3

the post saying alk went from 8.5 to 10, that may be an error.
say RC alk is 12, then it takes 45% water change to get an alk of 10 after water change.
a 10% water change will get 8.85 alk after water change.

Wait I think I miss read this, so you're saying if you mix it the ALK of the mixed saltwater drops over a period of 1-2 weeks but if I keep the salt stored it shouldn't be affected?

I only mix when I'm doing a water change, so it is usually used withing a few days depending on how lazy I am at the time.

Correct, the mixed liquid saltwater that is stored drops in Alk. The stored dry salt doesn't. Yea, use in a few days you are good. This is primarily a concern for us SPS keepers that need stable and predictable parameters.
