I finally setup a saltwater aquarium after being scared of them for years. This forum was key in getting my courage up. You can see the progression of aquascaping. I first tried to create multiple caves with as much reef bone as possible. This approach looked like a pile of rubble. I scaled back and still did not like it. My current scaping left me feeling relaxed and is pleasant on the eyes. I went for the island approach similar to the washington coast, Unfortunately my frogspawn took place of the lonely island. The reef bone started to turn green and pink about the same time as the diatom bloom. My first and only coral so far is a branching frogspawn.
I started the tank on 12-16-12. I added one piece of fiji lr the second week along with two hermit crabs. Finished cycling late january. I added the ocellaris and frogspawn on 3/10/13. I was really scared to buy my first coral. I went to Barrier Reef Aquariums in renton,wa with my two boys. Of course my 3 year old wanted the clown, and so did i. I immediately picked up the frogspawn when i saw the price $19.99 for 3 heads:dance: The frogspawn was irritated and nearly closed laying on its side in the frag tank. Shortly after getting the frag home and drip acclimated, the polyps opened all the way. This suprised me because of all the posts i had read about frogspawn not openings for days.
I dont check Water parameters. I vacuum and change water weekly. I think the pico tanks are the perfect way to go for people with limited space. I keep distilled water on hand and use Brightwell Aquatics reef salt. I dont use mechanical filtration, my sump has nothing but lr. I periodically remove the rock from the sump and vacuum out the sediment. There is 5 lbs of Caribsea live sand.
THe inabitants of the tank are...calcereous worms, 2 blue leg hermits, 1 astrea, 1 ocellaris, 1 branching frogspawn.
My only advice is research and dont be scared. Thank you for all of your help Reef Central
