Are 400w MH too much?

I guess you can say I'm a formore acro person. I've gotten tired of taking care of them. They will out grow your tank if you don't constantly frag them. They can be doing well and then for no reason die. My tank is a mix of corals but was mainly sps. I have recently lost alot of sps, and surpositly its all do to chemical war fare. So now I'm wanting to go mostly LSP. As of now I've got two very large octopus corals about the size of a basket ball. These are the oldest corals that I have. (6 years old) I split them every six months and traded them in to my LFS.


Anyway will my two 400w MH be too much if I start to get other LPS? I'm really wanting a gold hammer. I really really want an elegance coral but I've tried them before with no suscess.

well 400w are alittle over kill but it all depends on your tank depth, lights height, and corals placement in the tank. if your planning to go all lps id suggest stepping it back down to 250w. you shouldnt have any trouble selling these and buying 250w without loosing any money.
some corals will do fine under 400w mh's but i think in general you'll find that most lps will struggle under these lights and loose alot of color. good luck and welcome to the dark side lol

i have 400w halides over a 60 gal. prop system full of lps. i say go for it and if they seem to struggle just raise the lights a little.

it that 110 is the tall, 3ft long tank it will be perfect lighting. light lovers up top and the rest towards the bottom of the tank. i run two 400w 14k over my 180 lps.

My tank is a 110g. It has two 400w 14k's and two regulear floresents atintics. The lights are in a canapy which is 12'' tall.

dont get me wrong. you can keep lps under 400w mh's. but they do perfectly fine under alot less lighting. if your intentions are to have a mostly lps dominated tank, 400w setups are not the most cost effective and lps can grow under 250w just as quickly and well. they both have thier perks but 400w benefits seem to be geared more towards sps imo.

400 watt bulbs over a 110 is a lot of light, but with careful placement there shouldn't be too many problems with LPS.
