Are Mantis Shrimps supposed to be shy?

Don't get me wrong, I love my Mantis Shrimp and I don't need a killer that will waste everything in the tank the moment he sees it, but mine seems a tad shy.

Won't really go after his own food, waits for it to find him in his lair (carved out a large hole in a piece of live rock).

I was thinking of turning the tank into a nano reef, and leave him there, provided he would leave the corals alone. I figured I'd be pushing my luck to put crabs in, but he's left all the hermit crabs, and snails alone. I've tossed in some "glass shrimp" (freshwater transparent shrimp) that do okay until they wander into his home...

Will his behaviour change or do I just have a docile one?

I was originally feeding him by way of bamboo skewer, would I could feel him smashing at to remove the food, but now he just gently removes the food (dried krill) and doesn't go after the skewer.

Calming down or learning it's not a threat?

He is most likely getting acustom to being fed that way, all three of my mantis calmly take food right from my hand, but will still attack live food.
