bought mine from http://www.saltycritter.com/skimmers-asm.htm 5 months ago, was a lot cheaper though, prices must of went up. google- "asm" "g4" and maybe add "sale"

I coughed up the $$$ on my ER skimmer for a gate valve mod & after getting it I realised it was $$$ thrown away.
So on my G3 I went to Lowes & purchased 10ft of 1.25 PVC at $4.11 (5ft was $4.89), 1 1.25 in 90deg ($.80), 1 1.25 in T ($.80) & a 1.25 in gate valve ($7.00 or so). Thus I had under $15.00 tied up in all the parts plus I have 8+ft of extra 1.25 in pipe! The gate valve itself isn't as nice as what the $40 kits include but I did not think the difference was worth $25 + shipping!!

Was it a gate valve or ball valve for $7.00?
I know that the lowes and HD's in my neck of the the woods only sell Ball-valves.
BTW, I am loving my G4X (30" height w/sedra 9000) W/DIY gate valve mod!

I have an ASM G5 skimmer with the gate valve mod. I am looking to increase the skimmer's performance. I have considered adding a third pump, and I have considered doing the recirc mod. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Could I add a third pump and just do the recirc mod on it, thereby eliminating the need for a feed pump? Are 3 pumps too much for the G5? Could I add a third pump and do the recirc mod on all the pumps, as well as add a feed pump? What would you do to increase the performance of the G5?

It's a ball valve.... couldn't remember the name of it
I think Savco has the gate valves for $10-15 ea but I thought I would try this first. After talking with ER in regards to my 12-2 they state 1-1.5 x's the volume of the tank should "ideally" be pumped into a RC skimmer for optimal results. So for my 12-2 & used their new SP4 pumps in RC mode then purchased a eheim 1250 which does 320 ish gph (my tank is a 260g) so I thought it would be close enough. For a G5 I would think the same principal would be true. I would use either both pumps in RC then get a pump properly sized to bring new h20 in or you could go RC on 1 pump & let the otherone stay the way it is now. No clue if it could take 3 pumps........

I find that the "Bill and Elaine" mod works best for me. There is a pic burried somewhere in this thread, but it's basically the T coming straight off the riser with a straight piece out the top of it and the gate valve off the side of the T. Controls the level just fine and cuts down on micro bubbles in the sump.

I think I found my sweet pump for my trusted G2 skimmer. I went from the Sedra 3500 to the Gen-x 2400. The performance was getting better. Then I did the gate mode and recir, it got better. However, after the Gen-x impeller and the back cooling plate got rusted so badly, I had to dump the pump. I was thinking to get either the Eheim or Aquabee pump, but two were too expensive. Then I decide to go with the OC2700 pump. I say, I did have a hard time to get the pump to fit into my current setup and use the venturi from the Sedra 3500. However, after all the hard work, it paid off. I got better skimmate than before tho. Awesome pump, quieter too...
