Has anybody had one of these fish? Any pictures?
Thinking of getting one and would like some first hand info on the species Acanthurus Bahianus.
Thank you very much for your input.

I think the species you are talking about is the Acanthurus coeruleus. Which looks like this:

Acanthurus bahianus is this one:

Acanthurus bahianus aren't as pretty and don't get the blue color. Acanthurus coeruleus on the other hand is quite pretty as the picture shows. I frequently catch them down here in South Florida when I go diving. Usually I catch them when they are small and still yellow. I prefer them over the pacific yellow tangs because they don't seem to be as aggressive.

I had one in my tank until the hurricanes hit last year and he perished :( . Wonderful fish though and they become more beautiful as they get older. Sorry I don't have any pictures to show you but i'm going diving this week and I may get one. If I do i'll post the pic.

That is exactly it!!! Thanks very much for clearing that up for me zfunk. Realy good link you gave me. The pictures shown on there are the best Ive seen so far, they are quite beautiful, I definatly want one! Especialy considering they a great algea controlers.

Sorry to hear about your fish. I wish you luck on your dive to look for a new one. Keep me posted.

Thanks.

Well if you guys notice his info down there below his posts, it says he has a 75 gallon tank :).

Green Thumb, if I can find a spot with a group of them I could catch you one and ship it to you (if you don't mind paying the $25 dollar shipping cost that is). It will be small and yellow, but i'll let you know. I should be going diving this week.

He just updated that. It wasnt there when we asked him the question.

zfunk, I would take you up on that in a second, however I live in Canada and there are restrictions on importing live stock, To bad:(

Im going to have to vent a little here, I came onto this forum to get FIRST HAND INFO on the atlantic blue surgeon, not to get instigated on the size of my tank, especialy not by a couple of newbies who spend most of their time in The Louge posting non related subjects and wining about how I dont have time to waste with them...

LOOK CLOSELY, 20 years experience keeping fish, worked in a few tank rooms. (uhhhh,... maybe this guy knows what hes doing a little bit eh!!!????)

QUOTE:thats not good when you avoid the tank size question

Whats not good is when some newbie, who obviously has too much time on his hands, posts away like hes holding an automatic weapon, instead of just sitting back and actualy learning something:)

Anybody can go to liveaquaria.com and act like they done all and seen all, and I cant stand it.

Im here to enjoy inteligent peoples experiences and knowlege.

No need to get angry there Green Thumb, he just simply asked what size tank you had. Maybe he had some advice about keeping one in a 75 as he has a tank that size.

Also I can write that I have 20 years experience, does that make it true? nope. He was just trying to offer advice and you totally blew him off.

That is cool though, I am glad we could all be of help to you. I actually used to have one in a 75 gallon, but since I am a newbie I will leave you alone.

sorry to have wasted your time and made your life so miserable.

First of all, you thanked in advance for INPUT. Input on keeping a tang would have to be based in part on knowing one's tank size. Instead of answering the question directly, you made a subtle change to your profile, indicating to me that you didn't want to address the issue.

And newbie is a relative term. You're apparently a newbie when it comes to the atlantic blue surgeon, eh? Eh?

Asking a simple one-line question is not posting like he's holding "an automatic weapon".

Well now that we are all getting along well. :rolleye1: Green Thumb, thats to bad you live in Canada cause I would have gladly shipped you one. I'm sure you'll be able to find one if you look hard enough. Good Luck.

Thanks zfunk, I would be very interested in seeing the photos if you succeed.

CLEARLY I asked for input on keeping an Atlantic blue surgeon, obviously none of the people who asked me the size of my tank have first hand info on keeping this specimen. I made the change to my profile as to deter people who sit at home all day telling people they cant keep this or that. If you dont know dont post!!!!!!!

Please, asume that people will have read the live aquaria write up.

I admitedly am, and so are you and the rest of the people who asked the size of my tank. You all realy should just sit back and learn from guys like zfunk who obviously has kept this specimen and isnt about to rehash a bunch of info he read on the internet to make himself look smart or to hear himself talk.

Im referring to people who post an average of 16 posts a day on a reefing forum about everything but reefing acting like because they hang out on the internet all day they know something.

Nice one buddy, i come to this forum to lie to people so I can feel good about myself.

Nuff said.

:) Green Thumb I would really consider calming down, not only are you making yourself look bad its obviously not helping you find info on this fish ;). If your offended by someone asking for what size of tank you have, IMO your going to have a pretty tough time getting advice on this board. I'm not going to pick apart your post as I feel its probably not going to make a lot of difference ;).

:) I'm going to take that back just to reply to this one little statement as I assume its aimed at us "lounge lizards" :D. Just a little bit of inside knowledge most (can't speak for everybody) of us don't post so much here to make ourselves look smart or cool. ;) We post here a lot because we like to talk with many friends we have met over this board (and others).

I was trying to help you. I just wanted to know a simple question like how large you'r tank was. I wanted to make sure you could keep an ABT. Don't yell at us for trying to help. My 2 cents.

Ok ill calm down, and I can totaly understand that people make friends on the internet.

You however need to see that when you and your friends gang up on someone with the tank size question, your ganging up on someone, and they might take offence to that.

It might be more polite to asume that someone, especialy someone who might have 20 or so years of experience, already has an idea of what size tank to keep what in. But i guess I shouldnt take it personnaly right;)
