Bacterial Infection?

I just got back from a 4 day vacation to find 3 of my 4 clams dead. I had 2 Maximas one blue and one purple with a gold edge and a electric green Crocea. I have had these clams for over a year. I recently added another Crocea about 2 weeks ago. Could the new clam cause a bacteral infection to kill the other clams I had? If so should I do anything to this clam? It looks like it is in good health. How long should I wait to add new clams to replace the dead ones?
Thanks,
Mike

I just read this thread http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=131880&highlight=pinching+mantle and it looks like the clams died from pinching. I didn't think that could happen so quickly. All of the clams looked fine before I left and they were pinched worse than any picture on the thread. I guess that is what happens when they die from it.
My newest crocea clam that is still alive is doing great, full extention of it's mantle, closes if you look over the tank and cause a shadow, etc... Should I do a fresh water dip even it is showing no signs of pinching? If it continues to do fine how long until I can add new clams?
Thanks,
Mike

The pinching mantle disease in that thread is a progresses slowly. It starts at only one small part of the mantle and spreads slowly over weeks/months until the whole mantle is pinched. That is how it is for my clams anyways. Therefore, I don't think that is what killed your clams. May have been another disease/infection. I would think it would be ok to try another clam in a couple months, 6 months to be safe.

Mike, About 2 years ago I had 2 maximas a crocea and a squamosa growing nicely for a couple years.I added a dereasa from an online vendor and within 3 weeks all were dead except the dereasa.I waited a few months and added 2 maximas, they too were dead in a few weeks.I removed the dereasa and waited around 3-4 months and added some croceas and all has been fine.I did some research and remember reading that some clams can carry disease yet not be infected themselves. If you add another clam and it too dies then maybe your crocea could be the culprit.------Ralph

If anything starts looking weird with the crocea should I do a fresh water dip? Is that kind of the only cure for clams?
Mike
