bak pak 2 mods

Replacing the Rio600 with a 800 is the best mod i know of next to the airstone mod. That's about it really. I don't like the airstone mod because I feel it's counterproductive but it does boost the performance.

Yes because I think if you go any higher, you'll get microbubbles in your tank. The issue isn't so much about flow. You must balance out water/air input with contact time. You can put say a Rio2100, but all that's going to do is aerate your water because it'll be flowing so fast that the bubbles that do get organics attached will simply flow back into your tank. A venturi skimmer will have a reduced flow rate due to the air being mixed into the water. Going with the 800 will increase your flow rate slightly, but the main reason for doing it is to get more air into the mix.

Yes you could do a Maxijet, but you'll need to buy the venturi adapter piece that the Seaclone uses which doesn't come with the Maxijet.

Oh. The venturi came with my bak-pak
Got one w/ MJ1200

I also wrapped fishing line around the impeller in a symettrical pattern to make it like a needlewheel skimmer.

It been working w/ the mod for at least a month

Just make sure it is symmetrical so there are no vibrations

Well, not much I can say in regards to the Maxijet mod since I only use the Maxijet on my Urchin. Doesn't hurt to try I guess, but I will say this, after using my Urchin, I will never get a BakPak again..=X

Optimal performance on the BakPak is a lighter colored skimmate. It's hard to get the dry foam ppl talk about because the reaction chamber is tiny. This is what I can get out of my Urchin.

I had to empty the cup 2 times since last night at 10 pm its 8 pm now and it was green and you could not see through it at all.
Any one else have any more mods? OH i have bubbles in my display tank every where i have a bubble trap but i dont know how it fits on i got the skimmer used and i dont have the instructions any one have a good mod for bubbles or know how to install the bubble trap?

Do you have just the bubble trap that fits in the other compartment, or is it the surface skimmer/bubbletrap?

There should be 3 holes, you can remove the piece that secures the box to the powerhead and lower the surface skimmer more if there's too many bubbles, alternately, you can stuff some sponge into the bubble chamber to reduce the amount of bubbles flowing out.

Its not a bubble trap its a pre skimmerit fits on the pump i just found it on a web site. lol you just said that so will the bubble trap work well if i buy it?

Well since no one had any mods i liked and the bubbles are in my tank every where im making my own mods HEHE.

First off i never wanted a HOB skimmer so in the sump it had to go. Then i thought why in the sump i need the room so on the side of the sump it went. I had to remove the 2 little adjustment screws for when it went on the side of the tank. I took the soldering iron to them made them flat so it could sit flat on the stands floor next to the sump. Then i looked at the pump for my skimmer it would not reach the water so it had to come off i took off both the inlet and return they just screw off there is a bluk head. I need to make the pipe for the pump to put the water in the skimmer longer i went to lowes and got a female adapter and a 90 degree elbow and the pvc to extend the pipe longer the pumps venturi piece fits just right into the pvc just like the old piece now the pump reaches and even with the water level in the sump going up and down the skimmer will work just fine. Next the piece for the skimmer to sit on the edge of the tank to hold it self up. The piece would not reach on my sump and i may change sumps later so instead of melting it off and moving it down i just added a small piece of acrylic to the bottom of the triangle piece now instead of it holding up the skimmer it holds it from falling backwards not that it would the pvc and pump would have to be off and it sits totally flat. Next the air going into the pump was not enough so i took off the silencer and hooked it up to a good air pump i have a few more things to do but ill have to wait a little longer. I would like to make the inlet pipe bigger and get a bigger pump and venturi also i will be tapping the collection cup and running it to a reservoir the skimmer works great but the cup is small.

Ill post pics later.

I put a MJ900 on mine, did the fishing line mod and trashed the bio-bale and dropped several small chunks of live rock in the return chamber. I posted a thread on how to do this using pictures.fishing line thread

Since these mods and upgrades it has tripled the performance of this skimmer. The skimmate is now dark coffee-brown in color and the foam is THICK.

Another thing, you don't need the venturi adapter for these pumps(maxi-jets). There are pics on how to do this also in that thread... the MJ upgrade is worth it.

I also extended the water return 6 inches so the water dumps back into the sump under water that way i dont hear any thing. Ill post pics later tomorrow.

Im getting the parts for a 1 gallon reservoir for the collection cup on the skimmer from lowes tomorrow ill post pics after im done i need a new camera. Im also getting a penguin 1140 power head its like the maxijet 12 even made by the same company but its 300 gph while maxijet is 295 gph.
