Banggai cardinal question

I'm thinking about adding a pair of banggai cardinals to my 90 gallon tank. All the fish in there are peaceful, I was just wondering if there were any special considerations with a pair of cardinals? I have a BTA for them to associate with if they choose, 2 firefish, 2 mandarins, 2 blennies and a kole tang.

Thanks,
Tecno

I don't imagine you'll have much of an issue with the cardinals, they're generally peaceful with those other fish you list.

Yep, they're typically fine. If you get a breeding pair, the female can get a little more aggressive, but it shouldn't be a problem in a tank that size.

Compatability should not be an issue. As far as I know Bangaii's are not associated with Anemones.

They do associate with them but they do not physically enter the anemone. They would prefer a longspine urchin if possible. They simply utilize these creatures for the protection they provide.

Thanks guys, I feel better knowing that I shouldn't have a problem with them.

I decided not to put clowns in because they might get too aggressive for the tank and these guys look just as cool if not cooler.

assuming you don't have any similiar shaped friends, pajamas, etc...you should be fine.

They are pretty peacful. I have seen my babies host anemonies like they were clowns and do just fine. This has been witnessed in the wild as well. so i wouldnt worry much about that.

you should have no problems w/ the banggai pair. They are peaceful fish.
AS for association w/ long spine urchins or anemones. Banggais in the wild associate w numerous living surfaces, they are found regularly in corals, in and around anemones- where they will interact w/ the tentacles, and urchin where the fry will hide amongst the spines.
In the home aquarium these fish tend to associate w urchins, but numerous hobbyist have reported seeing their banggais in their anemones.
Either way- they are a great fish, here is some good reading on the subject

If you have long-stemmed xenia, or similar corals, they'll also swim in those, for a pretty cool effect. Doesn't offer a lot of protection for them, but it looks good.

whatever you do: I wouldn't use a sock with those cardinals...can't tell ya how many babies I found in my sump that would not have been there if I used a pre-filter like a sock

Very cool! We're setting up a 20 gallon QT tank that will probably turn into a breeder when the male starts holding the eggs to term. We're hoping they breed while in QT. :D

Bangaiis never bother anything in my experience, they even tend to school well with each other until a pair forms.

That's the last worry marked off the list. We don't have any other fished shaped the same. Some places list them as semi-aggressive, I wonder if there's a reason for that.

As mentioned above, when they're actively breeding, the female will tend to get more aggressive towards anything that moves.

For the record, I don't think a captive bred pair of ocellaris clowns would give those other fish on your list any problems in a 90. And you could get the bangaii pair too. They don't need anything in particular to associate with.
