And to answer your question about how to keep the bottoms clean, well... for me its a combo of two main things... Lots of water movement (flow) and the occasional siphon hose to suck up the crud where if eventually settles.
 
Looks good with the rock on the glass. Just recently took the sand out of my 34 gallon and like it much more.
 
Well... I decided to take the route that seagirl mentioned. I went to Wal-Mart and picked up a $10 HDPE cutting board and made custom-shaped "coasters" for my rockwork to sit on. Other than the coasters, the tank is bare glass bottomed.

Overkill? Perhaps... but I sleep well at night so im happy with my $10 investment :D
