Barrier between tank and stand

I'm about to set up my 40 gallon glass cube do I need any kind of barrier between stand and a tank?

Not if the stand is correctly built - a glass tank rests on the edges, so you don't need a barrier of any kind.

Not necessarily true - if it is a tank with plastic trim that is true. If it is a rimless tank then yes, it should be completely supported underneath and have a thin pad (1/4" Styrofoam will work) as well.
