Battery back up?

Does anyone have one? I have found some for computers, but they only work for about 60 mins. Does anyone have one that lasts for hours? I am not so worried about the pumps as the heater. So let me know, where you got it from.

Thanks.

You can get a UPS (battery backup) for about as long a a runtime as you like. The difference is cost and size.

Not sure if you thought about it but the heater shouldn't be running all the time so the 200?W draw isn't staright for an hour.

What about this one? how long do you think that this would last on just the heater alone?

APC is a vendor and I like their stuff. Thay have a great tool to help you figure out the runtime of the power consumption you have.

http://www.apc.com/tools/ups_selector/index.cfm

What we need to know is what size heater you have and how long you want it to run (if it ran the entire time the power was out).

Once you find the one you want compare prices (not at apc but other vendors googler the model #) also you can then better compare different vendors better. Watch the watts and VA when compairing

Why would you only be worried about the heater? If you have no flow, the heater would only heat up the water in that one section well. You need flow to get a heater to work effeciently.

Thats a good piont, I did not even think about that. then I would need to figure out the pump as well.

The power inverters I mentioned connect to a car battery or to a cigarette lighter. Yes they have outlets on the side. They also usually come with low battery alarms so you can go out and start the car. I have heard most people by a big marine battery and charge it up and store it in the garage till needed.

is there anything else that i can get that I do not have to hook up a car battery?

For a power outage your typical worries are ......temp. water movement and oxygen. your tank uses a- lot more oxygen than you think and if you are not running your return pump you at least need an airstone.

as far as the car battery you could just get a used one have them charge it up for you and store it till needed. If you use it up you can take it to any garage and they will charge it for like 20 bucks

ok thank you very much for all your help, i will look into this a letter farther.

Not sure of your budget but this is a cool device.

I've found that all the ups for computers don't have enough juice, and to get one that does is a fortune. You can even buy this one at amazon.

I think for the aquariusts purpose, it's money.

I'm strongly thinking of getting one.

The key is I wouldn't use it for my heater, my tank is big enough to hold it's temp for a while. This would more for circulation. It would run my rio 2100 for a whole day!

I was hopng to find something that would be connected into the wall and run off that power, but when the power goes out switch to the battery power. I can not believe that with all the people who own aquariums that have thousands and thousands of dollars invested that there is nothing that serves this purpose, like the ups for computers but holds more juice.

On the link I posted http://www.apc.com/tools/ups_selector/index.cfm

I set to 600 watts and said I wanted it to run for 12 hours and it would cost about $1800 thru them. You could find one I would much cheaper than that thru a retailer. They have units that will run 48 hrs and much more but you would have to morgage your house to get them.

I have the same thought if you have several thousand in the tank it is cheap insurance.

In that case, a ups will be nice to have, but they're pretty expensive. A battery with a dc-to-ac inverter diy would also work but battery do discharge over time and can run out of juice easily if you have too many device connected to it. It will be good only for an airstone and a small pump to circulate water in your tank. What you'll need is a diy relay that connects this small pump and airstone to the battery when the main power shuts off.

What I have also read from other rc thread is that they really do use a portable generator for power backup.

Any one looked into gel celled batteries?Ive got 5 of these and 2 500 watt power invertors. The gel batteries seem to last longer then my marine ones did.I live in tornado alley and have not yet had a problem with losing anything.

P.S. dont waste your money on the name brand of the battery. Also if you have a sams club nearby their power invertors are cheap.
