i just orders some Select Lalo Live Rock from LiveAquaria.com and it comes uncured. I was wondering what everyone's way of curing LR is and if anyone has any experiences with this type of rock (i.e. what grew on it, what died off) please chime in and let us know!

I suggest very good water flow with elevated levels of Ca/KH. Some moderate lighting, such as Actinics could be beneficial, but limited use, maybe 6 hours a day. Partial water changes daily will minimalize die-off, but changing too much may encourage it!

I know that when my rock came, I put it in my tank and just kept checking the water parameters everyday. Once I saw the spikes in ammonia, I'd do a 20% water change and continued that every couple of days until the ammonia plateaued.

The very first thing you want to do with a newly shipped batch of live rock is get it into a tub of water (or your tank if it's a new system) that is being circulated, aerated and heated to the temperature of your tank. I then remove the rocks from the tub one by one and give them a good scrub with a toothbrush and rinse them off with the same kind of water that's in the live rock tub. I monitor ammonia, nitrite and nitrate every few days and add Cycle to help get the bacteria colonization started up. If things get too smelly, do a water change. Once the ammonia and nitrite spikes have passed and nitrate production has peaked, I start caring for the live rock just as if it were part of a reef, regular water changes, additives, adjusting alkalinity, lighting and so on.

I had a massive outbreak of hair algae with my rock that I am still combating. Why is that?

did you cure it first? or just put it in your tank? hair algea is caused by phosphates, i know that. check them?
