BIOCUBE 29 HQI owner thread.

it is hot but i have mine high and runs from 10am to about 5pm. works perfect to regulate temp between 78 - 80 degrees.

Anyone know if I can stick a large maxima clam at the top of my reef under the hqi? Right now I have him in the sand. If not what would you recommend for the top?

The HQI is definitely enough light to keep a maxi, you don't even need to have it up at the top.

Depends on your personal preference, I think 20k is too blue and prefer the whiter look of 14k. Also, I dont know if anyone ever answered but the best topoff water is pure RODI. Salt doesnt evaporate so if you topoff with SW your salinity is going to rise.

Here is my BC. 2 months old.

i have added 2 hydor flow pumps along with a hydor smartwave to alternate them i have frogspawn, nem, and hammers in the tank along with some hards. is this over kill on them or do i just need to position them in a place that they essentially just initiate the flow on my rocks?

Has anyone looked into the UV protection of the BC HQI???? I'm reading that the splash guard is not a UV protect, but that the stock Coralife bulb has some sort of UV protection in it's glass? Is this true? I dont use the glass top as my tanks too hot. Can someone chime in I have a two year old and if this thing is leaking UV it's going in the trash.

The splash guard does, in fact, provide uv protection. I believe i have read somewhere that pretty much all glass filters uv rays, but don't take my word for it. I would not worry abour the hqi.

The splash guard DOES NOT provide UV protection. I have seen several people state that they have called the manufacture and were told that it does not block UV.

I had a few pieces of glass cut to fit into my fixture so I could run different bulbs without the worry. Still have 2 pieces leftover actually.

The splash guard does block UV from passing through it. However it does not completely cover the lamp and UV light can go out the back of the lamp and reflect around the splash guard. That is why Coralife lamps have the UV protection built into the glass. Not all glass will block UVC and some European brand lamps allow the UVC to pass through.

Can you tell me more about what type of glass you had cut? A new splash guard?

What I had cut does not replace the curved splash guard, it is a flat piece of glass that slides into the fixture from one end. If you take off one of the plastic end caps on the fixture where the silver colored grill is you can slide the grill out and slide in a piece of glass.
