biofilter question

Does anyone know about how long it takes for a bio filter to catch up to the load placed on it?

Let me explain what I mean a little better. I have 2 QT tanks set up ( a 20 g and a 10g) and I keep a good sized percula clown in it to keep the bio filter going. I have a millennium 3000 with 3 of the bio filter plates in it. I got some new additions and I moved the clown to the 10 gallon and put one of the filter plates with her in a millennium 2000 and I split the 20 gallon with a divider and left the other two plates for the two new fish. I also added some biospira to all the tanks just in case.

I may have to treat with medication as the two new fish came in scratching and I need to make sure the biofilter is strong enough before adding any meds.

If anyone can give me a good indication of when things will be stable enough I would be grateful or even better yet a better way to build up the biofilter before new fish arrive would be even better.

This has always been a problem for me and I need to find a good solution.

Thanks,
C.G.
