Birdsnest nubs?

My first SPS - a pretty little birdsnest I got from local clubs last frag swap, about a month ago. I've been keeping my MHs off or only running them for a few hours a day due to the recent high temps and not having a chiller. I recently noticed that when the MHs are on the tips of the branches and several places along each branch are developing white nubs; heres a pic:

Are these OK? Potential new growth sites or a problem?

Also, the candycane coral in the pic above has a smooth dk. red or maroon blob on one of the branches. Any ideas?

That means the birdsnest is getting ready to branch out.

Ditto...
