Does anyone have any history on the black A. ocellaris? I have never seen any in books or in picks in the wild, is this a bred traight? I have looked and have found almost no info this fish?

Dave

I bieleve they are found in the waters off of Australia. They can be found WC but if you do find them you can expect to pay a hefty sum to get it. I know they are pretty rare to come by so maybe its that way in the wild too.

You know I think I have read that some where now that you mention it... TMC and ORA breed them and some place out of Australia to I believe.. Inbreeding is a problem from what I understand now... Some new DNA is needed?

Dave

They are only found in the Darwin area. From what I understand, which may or may not be 100%...

A local captured several pairs and started breeding them. TMC and ORA got stock from this breeder and started their own lines. I hear ORA has got new WC stock since and that TMC has not.

And yes there is a DNS shortage in the line. IMO ORA has the best offspring. Nice body/head shape and generally turn totally black after a couple of years, while I can not say the same thing about other supplies.

Oh, BTW...

Every year I hear of shipments of WC, but to date, with considerable effort and expense on my part, I have yet to get a "100% for sure" WC black variant of A. ocellairs.

There are lots of CB available from down under, but if they are WC there is a paper trail that is producable, no one has yet shown me the import/export docs to prove WC.

there come from the England shores or the Austrailian shores. The ones from England can have undeveloped white lines across their bodies (misbared).

huh?

Well I hope he did not mean they come from the ocean there... I hope he meant tmc because they seem to have a high percentage of misbarred black A ocellaris compared to ora...

but you probably already know that.....

I see alot of these black clowns from ORA and every single one always have an incomplete mid-section bar on one side. Anyone know if this gap will eventually get fill in as the fish matures?

Beng

Alright oama, how good are you? I'm picking up a breeding pair of black o's Friday, and the current owner bought them off someone else, so I don't know where they're originally from. Can you tell by looking at them if they're your little offspring or not? :p

criccio,
Since your in IL, I would venture to bet yours came from Inland Aquatics in Terre Haute, IN which in turn got them from Fishey Business in Bowling Green KY. Mitch breeds his own fish, although I don't know where he got his first fish, he has been in the business for over 20yrs. From what I've seen none of his has any mis-bars, you could always email/pm him. PM me for his details.

I have a beautiful black occ. from ORA that was early in it's change when I got it. She (now paired and appears to be the female of the two) now is all black except for the very tip of her face but her color is still changing as she matures. I love this color variation and am curious to see any offspring. She is paired with another occ. but with standard coloring. It will be a while before they are mature enough to spawn. Thanks for the background on the black occ. origins.

Dear Beng and knowse
If you are only seeing mis-bar Black Ocellaris from ORA, then I would suggest you research a better local source for ORA stock. Any LFS is able to purchase Full Barred Black Ocellaris. Mis-bars have there place in this market, but they are no means the only ones available.

criccio
You know I can't!:D They could be from Aussie CB stock or even TMC as likely as ORAs. But if you know the ages, it could narrow the field. ORA has only had these available w/in the last five years.

Sorry Oama,
I've never seen a mis-barred anything!!!! I was just telling criccio about Mitch's black tb ocellaris and the possiblity that his fish might be from him.
