Black Ich

I've read a bunch of threads on Black Ich (Turbellaria), and they recommend using Formalin, but I was wondering if hyposalinity would clear it up as well.

I am going to be doing hypo anyway, and it might be less
stressful for the fish if I could just do hypo on it....

Thanks,

Jim

I have never heard of hypo being an effective treatment for black ich .. different critter than crypto (SW ich). Some people use periodic FW dips rather than Formalin .. but remember the dips are designed to kill/remove the parasite on the fish .. while hyposalinity treatments for SW ich work by preventing ich from hatching .. something a bit different than the flatworm turbellaria your dealing with.

Kevin,

Thanks for the reply. Not dealing with it (yet),...LOL. Just wondering before I go buy the fish. Got my q-tine tank all set and ready for my new batch.

So,...which would you do (as a preventative) before q-tining, a FW dip or Formalin?

I don't focus on black ich much .. however I do give each of my fish a prophylactic formalin bath prior to QTing which would help with black ich and a number of other problems. I also use hypo as std practice when QTing. Many people would argue that use of prophylatic measures are unecessary and potentially harmful ... there is some logic to that line of thinking and something you should consider.

the one experience I have had with black ich was treated with a single freshwater dip and cleaner shrimp. Hippo tang got ich the second day he was in the tank, put a cleaner shrimp in, the next day ich was gone, later that day/night he had black ich, 7 min fresh water dip, his black ich was gone the following day. How long has he had black ich? is it really bad? guesstamate how many spots he has?

Thanks for all the replies.

Don't have the fish yet,....but I wanted to be armed with the info just in case.

I always do a 6 week hypo for tangs, and was just wondering if hypo killed black Ich as well. Sounds like a prophylatic formalin dip and the hypo should cover me on both fronts.

Thanks again,

Jim
