I wanted to share a picture of my latest addition....a 2" Black Maxima. Not the greatest picture but I figured what the heck.

Congrats, you now own one of the most rare reef items that you can. Please take great care of that lil beauty!

Best of luck, Rob

I want one I have been looking for months for a black clam with no luck.

Any way nice looking clam ReefBum :D were did you get it.

I have been on the lookout for the black maxima with the white spotted mantle. Thats a beauty you have there bet it cost you a good deal. IMHO its worth it so long as you can maintain them in a healty manner.

Good luck with him:D

Thanks everyone. Yeah it wasn't cheap but I hadn't seen one that size in my area for a couple of years so I went for it. The LFS I purchased it from actually had another one left but I don't know if it lasted the weekend. The place is called House of Fins and its located in Greenwich, CT. Maybe they'll do mail order. The one I didn't buy was a bit more spotted than the one I bought.

i paid a buck eighty....which is not bad in my area since I've seen some larger ones go in the 3 to 5 hundred range.

Whoah! Are you serious?

My god, I was thinking it would be at most $100. Geez, are clams that expensive? I can't imagine spending that kind of money on a livestock. Hmmm, next time you want a black maxima, send me an email. I'm sure I can find one for $100 over here.

Jimmy if you want a black and white one let me know. You're looking at 40-60 depending on size/quality.

I certainly figured I could get it cheaper if I dealt directly with a left coast vendor but I still prefer to hand pick my clams. Unfortunately, you have to pay more for this privilege on the east coast, especially near the NYC area. Maybe I'm wrong on this....I'd be curious to hear the thoughts of other eastern reef enthusiasts on whether they feel a substantial mark-up exists on livestock in the east vs. the west.

$180 would sound about right for a clam like that here in Boston. I paid $200 for a 5" teardrop a little while ago. Again those are prices from a LFS where you can cherry your clam in person and the LFS will have often held the clam for a couple weeks to make sure it's doing well.

In terms of West Coast clams, don't you guys have some sort of a disease epidemic going on out there?

But, it does make sense that prices increase as you go east since I think most of the clams enter the country through LAX

Mad scientist, you are correct. Most thing you see in the trade come through the Los Angeles LAX, and a small percentage goes through Florida. So if the West has something, it will filter out to the East.

Ali, I'm interested in a Black / White Maxima in probably a few weeks when I recover from the Skimmer I just purchased.
