blackbanded shark question

i have had my egg for about a week now,,,but i got the most developed egg from Sharkys...i was wondering how long does it take for it to hatch...it is really moving around in there...the egg does tricks....looks like there is a hole started in it but not sure....the shark is looking tight in the egg...{no room in there} so any info would be GREAT...!!!!thanks so much......:D

First off the shark he is talking about is a black banded shark not black tip reef shark. Black tip reef sharks are viviparous (spell check) while black banded sharks are egg-layers and the egg takes 6-7 months to hatch. The black tip reef shark is a toatally different species.

Sorry my bad, I misread that one...lets see what I can dig up about THOSE sharks now.

This is what I've dug up so far about them....I was actually considering getting one myself when I saw their tank requirements in gallons. Sure....I could handle that, but I would just need to find somewhere to put a tank of that size in a small apartment. Then again since I'm moving to VA soon I should probably wait until after the move. If I find out anything else of note I"ll let you know.

sounds good....yea i live in an apt too ....i am looking for a 180 or larger now...my shark is still in the egg but i think thats it really close to hatching...the egg sac is about the size of a nickle and the shark is all curled up in there....i was also wondering does it hatch at nite or day...i want to get pics of it hatching.....thanks

I'm not entirely sure, I saw a shark hatch on the discovery channel years ago and it was at night.... but then again I really don't think that there is a definite "when" on the topic.

how small is the egg sac on the shark when it hatches..??? sorry this is my first shark....im new to sharks but not new to sw tanks....

For shark beginners it's best not to get an egg. Buy the shark first. And then with more shark experience you can get an egg. In proportion to would you buy a clownfish egg to start with? I don't think so.

and from experence i would say go with the shark egg. I have had way better luck with eggs. With eggs they are already used to you water and all of mine have eatin within the first week. my most recent ate the first day.

And I wonder when you have ever had a shark egg?
Profile says "40 gallon breeder 2x250 mh,2x96 vho cpr bak-pak skimmer" I may have never owned a shark but it makes more sense to start out with a shark not the egg. I see many more complaints about problems with eggs than with the actual shark itself.

I bought an egg too. I waited until i couldnt see the yolk anymore and then (I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS) I cut a hole in the casing to take a peek. Well the yolk was a lot bigger than I thought. So I waited like two weeks and then when I couldn't see any yolk I cut her out of her egg. She started eating a week later and she hasn't stopped. One thing that I noticed before I cut a peep hole was that the casing was transparent 100% in some spots. But good Luck and happy sharking.

The hatch time on the shark is dependent on the following... What kind of shark it is, not sure what you have. It is also highly temp. dependant. The warmer the water the faster he will grow, dont raise the temp because you in a hurry for him to hatch. I think the egg is the way to go for a first time shark. Hope you have a big tank for this guy, they grow fast! PS Get the sharks and rays book by Scott Michael, most people on RC give shark advise and have never kept sharks or even saltwater fish for that matter, do believe everything you read on the wed, get the book, trust me it is worth it. Good Luck, Enjoy!

Hope he's not in your 75 gallon :( But please do not start a flame war :(

I thought you wern't going to start this over here or is it just that you can't help but give advice about things you have no experiance in. I have tried hard to not respond to you posts but your going down a road already traveled and you need to look back at where it got you. You left another forum because you wore out your welcome with posts like this . take my advice and stop giving advice .

No she is in the 45 for now although I am upgading to the 75 in a few months then in about a year I want to build a shark pond.

yea i am going to build a shark lagoon also...but for now i am going to buy a 180 if i can find one used. ...otherwise i will buy one new,,,happy sharking

you should be just fine with your plans . if the yolk sack is super small and it looks like the egg is cracking then your getting close just be patient and it will hatch. in the mean time just keep your water quality good . Be sure to get a grounding probe in the tank thats important . Soon you'll have a baby shark swiming around .

Good luck
