It can be done but its not easy and it time consuming. You need to make a tool out of a block of wood and a handfull of nails. Pound the nails in at a 45 degree angle until the tip barly extend through. Then you need to thrash the acrylic with your new tool going ever possible direction until the surface is completely opaque. Prep your wood by sanding with 80 grit across the grain and coat with poly glue. Work in small sections and brush weldon4 over the acrylic to just soften the surface. Apply the wood and weigh it down dont clamp it.

Poly is glue like "gorilla" it expands. A sander will only create tiny grooves that go straight down. You need the grooves at an angle so that the poly will expand and lock onto the acrylic.
