Brown algae

I just started a tank about 2-3 weeks, and I got brown algae forming on the sand. Is that part of the cycling process or do I have my lights running too long. I have 250w hqi over a 24g nano cube about 12in above the tank. I run the hqi's for and 8hr period from 1pm - 9pm.

cycling process. all new tanks usally get brown algea also know as diatoms

I have a 20 gallon that's been up for 2 and a half weeks and it just started producing brownish junk in the sank and a little on the glass too. Sounds like it's normal growth for this stage since we're both having it...
