bulkhead question

can i drill my tank and put in a bulkhead for returning water to my sump, or do i have to use an overflow, so many people tell me i have to use an overflow, but i was seeing how an overflow works and if i put the bulkhead where i want the water level to be , wouldn't it be the same thing essentially .

You can and many LFS use this method for their selling tanks. The drawback is it limits the linear surface that is being skimmed so overflow boxes are recommended.
